Bear in mind: I'm biased against short-sighted policies.
I'd lump rent control in the class of policies that is extremely short-sighted and lazy, and maybe even—cynically speaking—self-aggrandizing to make politicians look good to hide the fact that they're probably secretly supporting housing speculation.
Rent control should have been a policy that is no different than price control (or even rationing under martial law) to curb price gouging; it's an emergency act that is passed in unexpected events, e.g. population spikes.
This is why I'm concerned about Ravi Kahlon, who seemed to have a rather antagonistic attitude towards landlords.
Don't get me wrong, I'm subscribed to the ironically-named /r/landlordlove subreddit; there are hordes of shady landlords, and I am always glad to see tenants fight back, but outright antagonism against all landlords just makes landlording (and thus boosting rental supply) an unattractive profession.
I hope Linda Hepner keeps him accountable.

As the City of Victoria conducts what outreach workers say are deadly sweeps of Pandora Avenue, those who facilitate unhoused individuals into addiction rehabilitation centres say there’s not enough spaces to meet the needs of those who are left on the capital city’s streets.
“What I’m faced with is, where am I sending them?” said Theresa Reeve, executive director of the relatively new non-profit Westcoast Recovery Outreach.
Reeve says private treatment centres only take a select number of government-funded clients, leaving empty beds open for higher paying private clients.
“I could fill up their treatment centre if they would allow me,” said Reeve. “But they only let a few government-funded beds. We need to increase those government funded beds. These people deserve a chance just like everybody else.”
“People having to wait anywhere from two weeks to three months waiting to get into a detox bed is not acceptable. We need a better system now. We just had an election about. Where are all the beds they promised they were going to build?”
The Minister of Health told CHEK News in a statement that her government is adding new services without specifics.

Just how small is 33 square metres? It’s about 350 square feet, or the size of a studio apartment in The Janion, specially built for short-term rental use in #VictoriaBC.
But a staff report to the City of Victoria is recommending that council consider allowing developers to build micro-units in new projects with minimum standards in place.
It’s an effort to create more units in a tight housing market, says Mayor Marianne Alto.
Alto says the report will come before council at its next meeting and, if approved, would have to be incorporated into the city’s official community plan.

A potentially precedent-setting ruling from the Residential Tenancy Branch has prompted B.C. Minister of Housing Ravi Kahlon to review regulations for special rent increase applications from landlords.
At issue is a recently published May 8 ruling that allowed a landlord to increase rent by 23.5 per cent for four tenants. The landlord claimed that their increase in mortgage financing costs, due to a sharp rise in interest rates in 2022, “could not have been foreseen under reasonable circumstances.”
Questions are now being asked in the B.C. real estate industry about whether this will prompt more applications for rent increases beyond those allowed by the provincial government.
“Landlords will definitely apply,” said Keaton Bessey, owner and managing broker at Greater Vancouver Tenant and Property Management.

The listed #RentalPrices are well above provincial #AffordableHousing thresholds & one #housing #researcher says it's an example of how difficult it is to build #AffordableRental buildings when market prices are so far beyond what average #renters can afford.
The leader of the #BCGreenParty called it an "infuriating" #misuse of #TaxpayerDollars.
The #BCNDPgovernment provided a $31.8 million #LowInterestLoan to Vancouver developer #JamesonDevelopmentCorp. for the 68-unit rental building through the HousingHub program, which is aimed at providing housing to middle-income renters shut out of the real estate market.
#BCPremier #DavidEby, who was the minister -responsible for housing at the time, was quoted in a December 2021 government news release announcing the project.
"Our government is investing in more affordable housing for people who work and live in Vancouver, and throughout B.C." he said.
The building at 1807 Larch St., called the L2, is set to be complete next month & is now advertising units.
According to the building's website, a 400-square foot studio apartment starts at $2,599 a month & a 840-square foot two-bedroom, two-bath unit is listed for $4,299 a month.

Despite #BCNDP saying they’ve stopped #renovictions in #BritishColumbia they’re still very much happening. After a ruling from the Residential Tenancy Branch #RTB dozens of #Esquimalt #seniors are being kicked out in four months for the new owners to do renovations.
Many of the #renters being displaced are #LowIncome, either on #disability or a #FixedPension. As a result, most of them can’t afford market rent, and fear they could be homeless.
Because the new owner is doing renovations, not a total demolition, Esquimalt’s #Tenant Assistance Policy isn’t triggered. Any stronger policy is the #BCgovernment jurisdiction.
“It’s time for the provincial government to actually stop this from happening. If they really want to stop renovictions, then they need to change the laws,” said Douglas King, executive director of #TogetherAgainstPovertySociety.
King says what’s needed is a BC-wide #TenantAssistance #policy to better #ProtectTenants facing #displacement, but also to prevent #taxpayers from paying for the consequences down the line.

Johnson is #Indigenous, from #Tsartlip Village, #Okanagan, Northern #Dene, #Han & Northern #Tutchone & Wolf Clan.
She has been on the #BCHousing #WaitList for nearly 5 years.
