#BDXL

Thx @TechTangents for this video and wiki on said #duplicator...

  • Personally, I would spec-out such a robot with one LG GGC-H20L and one LG BH16NS55 besides one of those ASUS drives to enable #HDDVD and #BDXL archival, but I'm not gonna do that because #CopyrightMafia criminalizing #archiving is a huge problem in my juristiction!

Personally, I would've likely shoved a #NUC alongside a #BDXL burner into the case and either turned it into some #Dock or some nifty & quiet #Linux #AllInOne, but either way #HughJeffreys made a cool #upcycling #video here...

@spacehobo @nina_kali_nina also #MiniDisc do take the best from 3,5" FDD, Mini-CD and MOdisc to recombime then into a really good portable media format.

  • Where #Siny not.constantly hamfisting stuff, it would be even more awesome.

Like if it used #BDXL tech and supoorted #FLAC as well as mixed mode (audio + data) use...

@fgaz @nina_kali_nina @spacehobo whilst we can all agree that #Flash is yet to come down in #pricing for #BulkStorage to compete with #HDD or even #Tape, it's pretty certain that #BDXL¹ as storage medium doesn't have sufficient capacity and that #SSD|s can and will get cheaper, bigger and faster at way faster speeds #HDDs and #Tapes can because these older media are already at the technological "bleeding edge" when it comes to reliability.

@rc2014 @f4grx @Datassette_User see, I want a #NeoFloppy as a new #Storage media because #SSD|s are the future and #BDXL and even #ArchivalDisc are getting maxxed out with current-day storage demands...

Plus #NVMe is faster than #SATA-6G that #ODD|s still use!

@RollingStone @all-news-RollingStone #WhatsMissing: a modern #PhysicalMedia that can keep up with the ever increasing need for higher capacity.

  • Cuz we approach the era where 128GB #BDXL can't contain modern games anymore and we need to do #MultiDiscReleases now or suffer through triple-digit Gigabyte downloads.

My suggestion: #NeoFloppy aka. #SSD|s in 3,5" FDD form factor!

@snow IMHO #piracy should only be considered "#theft" [with damages being limited to the cost of properly licensing it!] if the pirated material was still offered for licensing new under fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms.

In the past, #EA did offer to replace broken discs / cartridges for a nominal fee [AFAIK €10 per disc or €15 for double-discs] if people mailed in the original (broken) media. I'd say that is should apply to everything, tho granted that only allows people in theory to deal with #DiscRot (assuming the publisher is able and willing to perpetually honour this service), not allowing them to legally attain new licenses.

#Valve & #Steam legally workaround this by merely providing access and not a #license per-se.

  • Still, I think #piracy in almost all cases is (as GabeN correctly said:) "A services problem!" and if a product is fairly priced and then people will be willing to pay for it.

I just think that the rampant Enshittification of even #PhysicalMedia is unsustainable and I wish for an #OpenSource #competitor to #BDXL and it's #OnlineDRM!

@alterelefant @apicultor @Heidi OFC the "final level" of #Backups would be "#CrystalStorage":

  • Basically the density of a #BDXL, but with hundreds if not thousands of layers for Petabytes if not Exabytes of Storage per disc/shard/crystal...

@alterelefant @apicultor @Heidi OFC...

The only competiton so far besides #LTO and #IBM3592 is #ODA or #OpticalDiscArchive which is basically a fancy cartridge system containing 12 #bluray discs each...

  • Needless to say the need for #fast and #portable storage will make the use of #SSD|s (even if just simple NOR-Flash ROMs) sooner or later unavoidable given #BDXL has been maxed out at 128 GB, HDDs are too sensitive for many scenarios (we had #iomega #Jaz & #Rev already, and #RDX exists to this day) unavoidable, as data requirements rise faster than the average internet speed.

🧵 6/n next time, i won't be double-compressing my #MDISC #BDXL #backup.

I can't use the disc image directly, because in my infinite wisdom, i've compressed the already compressed file system.

Now i get to wait another hour-ish, before i can access my rather old files.

Well, i can try and scrape 'em off the busted NVMe.

#Sony cuts 250 jobs at optical media plant — recordable disc production to be phased out, says report. Pressed disc production doesn't seem to be targeted by the cuts. tomshardware.com/pc-components

Sony kills off Blu-ray and optical disks for consumer market — business-to-business production to continue until unprofitable. tomshardware.com/tech-industry ➡️ seguirán produciendo para otros.

@koko I only have a #HDDVD-ROM and a #BDXL burner...

#WhatNow?

@Natanox @wyatt8740 @ChrSt @tauon @ika

Several Reasons:

  1. They are getting harder and harder to come by, espechally my #X230Tablet.

  2. As they become more and more of a collectors' item, they become more and more sought after and more expensive (I have a #Vaio #P11Z that I used before that so I know this won't be a road I want to go down)...

  3. I've already maxed out it's current capabilities (minus adding a #BDXL burner, sacrificing WWAN for a 2nd [mSATA -] SSD and shoving in the biggest 2,5" SSD on the market) and the bottleneck is the i5-3320M (or any said generation Intel CPU) soldered to the mainboard.

I know some chinese modders aka. #nb51 released a custom drop-in mainboard but that used an i5-8550U but not only is that also quite old but I've not found any listing for it on any shopping site back then and even then it would've been economically unfeasible.

  1. I need new batteries but the original have #DRM amd #Lenovo doesn't make any new ones.

  2. A 1080p screen would be nice given it's 768p pen+touch screen didn't age well but that mod doesn't work for the #X230t and has a shitton of issues as I know from @fuchsiii 's #Lenuwu #UltimateX230...

Sadly all the machines on the market, even the @frameworkcomputer feel like a substantial #Downgrade in that department and demanding too many compromises in non-negotiable departments...

Like #ToolfreeSwappableBatteries or a 9,5mm Ultra Slimline ODD bay being missing...

@Clygro @fuchsiii I literally have this one.

The LG GGC-H20L...

Sadly it doesn't do #BDXL so I had to basically get a BU40N as well...

And now my front bay is crammed to the max.

a BeQuet! Dark Base 600 Case showing it's 3 5,25" slots crammed full wirh a BD+HDDVD ROM, A BDXL burner, a 3,5" toolfree drive caddy, a 2,5" drive caddy with sled and a 3,5" USB Floppy Emulator.
