Good morning from the Karoo National Park in the Gamka Karoo.
It is is the wet season and they expect about 30 mm in October.
In the foreground there are two Red Hartebees which are pretty much white dots in a pale green brown background
The park is home to the tourist attractions i.e. rhinos, buffalo and lions but we are here for the birds, plants and insects.

Good morning everyone. I'm up early with the parrots this morning and have just settled Ziggy in for breakfast. She wasn't happy with her mash this morning, but I think I made it too runny. The mash has to be just right for Madame, neither too stodgy or too runny, just like Goldilocks 😊

I'm watching Jadie come down for some water. She always approaches the bowl as though it is going to rise up and bite her, looking around carefully for a bit before she finally, gingerly steps forward to drink. The strange thing is, on a spray day, she will happily bath in her water bowl with gusto. Parrots eh? 🤷🏻‍♀️

The new cages for Ziggy and Jadie arrived yesterday so we'll be able to build them later this week when the new perches should hopefully also have arrived. I did forget to order them new snuggle felts though, so I'll need to do that today. The old ones could probably just be washed, but they are looking a bit tatty. All my parrots have a snuggle up toy with soft felt pieces that they can cuddle into at night - they are like babies after all 😊

Work today again, so I'd better get a coffee sorted and then dive in.

Eine männliche Mähnenente (Chenonetta jubata) marschiert am Betrachter vorbei.
Die Mähnenente ist eine mittelgroße Ente. In ihrer Körpergestalt und ihrer Nahrungsweise erinnert sie an eine kleine Gans. Der Körperbau ist insgesamt plump, die Beine sind verhältnismäßig lang. Männchen und Weibchen sind gleich groß. Der Schnabel ist kurz und stumpf, der Kopf dagegen ist verhältnismäßig groß. Im Flug fallen vor allem die weißen Unterflügeldecken auf, die sich stark von dem dunklen Unterschwanzgefieder und dem dunklen Bauch unterscheiden.
Männchen haben einen braunen Kopf und ein gesprenkeltes, weißschwarzes bis grauschwarzes Brustgefieder. Am Hinterkopf haben sie einen mähnenartigen Schopf, den sie auch aufstellen können. Das Körpergefieder ist überwiegend fein grau gezeichnet, das Rückengefieder, der Rumpf, Schwanz und der Bauch sind dagegen schwarzbraun. Der Schnabel ist dunkelgrau. Die Beine und Füße sind graubraun. Die Augen sind dunkelbraun. Das Männchen wechselt im Sommer häufig in ein Ruhekleid, das dem Gefieder des Weibchens gleicht.
Das Weibchen hat einen hellbraunen Kopf und ein graubraunes Gefieder. Unter und über den Augen befinden sich weiße Streifen. Die Brust ist ähnlich wie beim Männchen gefleckt, auch wenn bei ihr die Farbintensität etwas gedämpfter ist. Auf der Körperunterseite findet sich eine braune Streifung.

Had never been to Jewel Lake, and have not been back. It was a bit of a scary ride, but I'm glad I got there.

We saw this great egret at the actual lake, very thoroughly grooming its beautiful snow white feathers with its deep orange beak.

In this photo, the birds head is angled over its left shoulder. Its beak is lodged into the feathers just behind its neck, and we clearly see the bird's sturdy black legs and frilly pantaloons. Its left wing is slightly elevated and the wing feathers are spread.

Beyond the bird is a hefty log and some sparkling water. The bird is standing on the shore, which is dotted with broken, rust-colored pine branches.

The adult European robin is 12.5–14.0 cm (4.9–5.5 in) long and weighs 16–22 g (0.56–0.78 oz), with a wingspan of 20–22 cm (8–8.5 in). The male and female bear similar plumage: an orange breast and face (more strongly coloured in the otherwise similar British subspecies E. r. melophilus), lined by a bluish grey on the sides of the neck and chest. We have a lot of storms in the northeast US right now but last week I was able to get out and capture some of the fall colors. I really love the cool blue tones of the nuthatch against the fiery colors of fall. And that orange patch on its bottom end just tops it off!
