Last shot in this ski touring trio. After the effort of the climb, a silent reward: soft snow, fresh turns, and no one else around. These are the moments that stay with you long after the descent.

Guess who’s been sleeping already?

No #TrailRunning today, instead I took the morning off to go on a short #skitour with my eldest son over the #Schartenkogel to the summit of the #Glungezer at 2677m. An easy ski tour with fantastic views, only about 10 minutes away from where I live.

The weather gods were friendly the last few days, we got some snow in the mountains. Enough to ski down in fresh #powder ... doesn't get much better!

A collage of winter mountain adventure photos.

The top image shows myself and my son taking a selfie at a the Glungezer high mountain summit at 2677m, wearing ski gear including colorful sunglasses and headwear. They're dressed in blue winter jackets and have protective headgear. Behind them stretches a vast panorama of snow-covered mountain peaks under a clear blue sky.

The bottom left image captures a steep snow slope with ski tracks cutting through pristine snow. The bright sun is visible in the clear blue sky above the slope, creating a stark contrast with the white snow.

The bottom right image shows a mountain summit perspective with rocky outcroppings protruding through the snow. The tips of skis are visible at the bottom edge of the frame, and in the background, a sweeping vista of snow-covered mountain ranges extends to the horizon under clear blue skies.

The entire collage captures a high-alpine ski touring or mountaineering expedition in perfect weather conditions.

Sälka stugorna, on the way to Tjäktjapasset. April 2024

A couple black houses in the middle of a white plain. A clear backdrop just a bit behind them. Faint mountain tops at the distance. There’s no sky, just white dust. A skiing trail leading towards the photographer, marked with red crosses.

And some more photos for @deafferret who was asking earlier about our hiking/skijoring harness setup.

Dale's hip pack was made originally for fly fishing, but has lots of nice pockets for things you might need while out skiing on a day trip in the wilderness, and a nice wide padded back to distribute the pull of huskies. We can move the split bungee attachment to the waist belt on a full backpack for longer treks, as long as there are loops on the sides to attach to.

Here, Dale is also showing off his "Tiak" which is basically "Stick" in the Altai Mountains where they were inspired from. It's an alternative to ski poles, with the added benefit of braking on steep downhills. First trip, worked well!

A skier in warm winter gear takes a selfie of the harness setup connected to a husky out of view ahead and to the right. Two bungee cords are attached by triangle-shaped carabiners on a hip-pack, and have a quick-release attachment to the stretchy dog lead on the right. The hip sack has a pouch on the side, and the skier also has binoculars slung off on the same side. He's holding a long sturdy stick in his right hand.Another shot by the skier from the first photo, showing his hand and the end of the stick out of focus on the foreground, with his husky leading, and another husky and skier down the trail further ahead. The stick has the "A.S." logo of Altai Skis burned on it, and a string loop. One more photo taken by the skier with phone camera held behind his right hip, showing a bit more of the hip pack, with water bottle attachment visible and binoculars slung off the side. The harness and skijoring lead are somewhat obscured, but the husky ahead is visible as is the skier leading the way.

Skijoring Day #1! We wanted to break in our legs on something a little on the easier side, so we took the Hok backcountry skis down the Moose Trail, which follows the northern edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Several inches of fresh snow awaited us: a good depth for skiing without exhausting the huskies breaking trail for us. Hok skis floated nicely, though as always, their short length work the hips and legs to keep them going in a straight line much of the time, especially when the base isn't flat.

The busy snowmobile trail the first 1/2 mile from the trailhead is particularly annoying to ski on, and we were glad to break away to fresh powder.

Wolfish husky Tonttu leads the way down a snow-covered trail in young spruce and birch woods. The trail is completely smooth from fresh snow and long shadows of trees on the left drop shadows across the trail to the right with the low winter sun. The sky is mostly bright blue with hints of clouds.Tonttu from the previous photo looks back over his shoulder to check when the photographer will finish taking pictures and start skiing. His face is dusted with snow like a sugar-covered donut from having pressed his face into the snow just earlier.Looking back from the previous photos, Human Jeff and husky Zeena wait for the photographer to finish. Jeff is bundled in dark heavy winter layers and is adjusting ski goggles (which are fogging up already). Zeena has a happy smile on her face and waits patiently. They've just cut off a busy snowmobile trail through the spruce forest and are following the others' trail down fresh snow.Again looking back, a bit farther down the trail, Jeff and Zeena emerge out of spruce and pine into an opening bounded by white birch. The sun shines brightly.

A little skitour up the Roßkopf in Niederau near the #WilderKaiser with a friend of mine in perfect weather. Lovely views from about 1800m.

This was only my second skitour this year, so despite my extensive #TrailRunning, I felt it in my thighs. But no gain without pain 😁

This is a three-part composite image of what appears to be a backcountry skiing or ski touring adventure:

1. Top image: A silhouette of a skier standing on a snowy ridgeline against a dramatic sky with golden sunset colors and wispy clouds. The snow appears pristine and untouched, with smooth, rolling contours.

2. Bottom left image: A panoramic mountain vista showing multiple ski tracks in deep snow in the foreground, leading to a valley view with snow-capped mountain ranges in the distance. The terrain appears to be in an alpine setting with evergreen forests visible on the slopes.

3. Bottom right image: My friend and myself in winter sports attire pose together at the Roßkopf summit. We are wearing ski gear including backpacks, winter jackets (one in blue, one in darker colors), and are holding ski poles. Behind us is the spectacular mountain vista of the Wilder Kaiser mountains with peaks and a layer of clouds or fog in the valley below. The sky is a clear, bright blue.

For those who wonder about our reference to "Hok" skis, they're a model of backcountry ski made by Altai Skis with a permanent skin on the bottom for traction. They're also wider than Nordic skis, which give them more float in ungroomed conditions, which is what we often face.

We have the shorter 125cm models, which may be slower (actually handy on downhills with dogs) but very maneuverable and handle twisty snowshoe trails well. We use the same NNN BC bindings we have on our Nordic skis, so we can use the same boots with either.

With the skins, going uphill on these skis is a BREEZE compared to Nordic skis!

Hoks have been called the "gravel bikes of skis" and the moniker fits them well.

Skier Jeff pauses with husky Gypsy (RIP!) near a trail intersection at Afton State Park. Jeff is bundled up for very cold weather, his face hidden behind a face mask and goggles. He's lifted one leg and planted his short ski vertical in front to show off the fuzzy "skin" on the bottom of the wide ski.

Discovering godawnpatrol.com/app made me excited for touring this winter in the Lake Tahoe basin.

Dawn Patrol is a backcountry skiing app designed to help you plan safer and smarter tours. It provides detailed route descriptions, advanced terrain analysis, and tools to assess avalanche risks, enabling skiers and snowboarders to make more informed decisions in avalanche terrain.

It pairs well with caltopo.com/'s live satellite overlays.

Hello new starterpack followers!

Lapporten as seen from Torneträsk, Norrbotten, Sweden. April 2024

An almost all white landscape, flat frozen lake with snow on top in the foreground followed by some sparse trees following its shoreline. There’s a flat mountain range in the background with a very prominent U valley at the center, almost like a gigantic halfpipe. Bright blue sky.

Sharing some big mountain vibrations. You ever reach a view that is so beautiful you cant stop taking pictures? This was that moment for me, catching the last rays of daylight. Since it was quite cold the group I was with didn't stick around long. I have a hard time leaving these places, especially knowing how rare it'll be to ever return again. If you zoom in you can see some mighty glaciers deep within the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Grateful to be able to share such a memory.

One from the north - a "local hill" near Tromsø... A bit of technical flex in @inkscape going on, it is made of transparent and black - the background colour can be anything.

One of the funnest (and most work) parts was making the dots and wee legend, I like those a lot...

Skins are sticky strips of material that go on the underside of a touring ski to help users go uphill with less effort. Once upon a time, they were actual animal skins. Now they’re highly engineered manmade materials.
