Just remembered to put some water out for the birds and other critters in the back yard.

It's been so nice outside I've just been hanging out here with the dogs. Couldn't really do it back in Texas cause it was always so hot. Try and enjoy these moments when they come. They can be fleeting

🌿🐝 This week we visited Vancouver Flex Academy to check out their amazing backyard habitat and mason bee houses! Their school grounds are Backyard Habitat Certified and full of native plants, pollinator spaces, and student-built bee homes. Flex has some of the best outdoor programming around—huge thanks to Angela and her students for showing us around and for taking such great care of their mason bees! 💚🌼

A hanging red hummingbird feeder back light by the sunset with a fabulous hilly treeline behind it. I mean, it's prime bird happy hour location, near a Ridiculous Water Feature

Pulled up the yard wildlife camera feed and got quite a fright. #BackyardHabitat

Night vision (black and white) photo from a camera set up in the yard. A rabbit, surrounded by various plants, is looking straight into the camera while sitting in a stepping stone path. The night vision setting makes its eyes glow bright and eerie. A tree trunk and bare branches is in the back. Most of the image is too dark and murky to make out many details. A concrete walkway is between it and the camera. Everything feels a little ghostly.

Here is a good badger picture from last week. If you like badgers it's worth a closer look. #BackyardHabitat #NorthAmericanBadger #WildlifeCam

A picture taken at night. To the left of center middle, a badger is walking directly toward the camera. The badger and its immediate surroundings are light, above is black. It is maybe10 ft from the camera. Its head is cone shaped with the round widest part at the top narrowing to its nose. There is a thin white stripe from center nose, over its head and along its back. Its feet and end of nose are darker than the rest of its gray body. The photo makes it look like there are jagged white outline around its eyes, but it's the white rim of the inside of its ears combined with some white cheek markings.

The badger is low to the ground and is walking on field grass that is mowed short, but right behind it is a large mound of dirt to one side of a hole into the ground (not seen). There is another pile of dirt closer to the bottom right. It looks determined to find a gopher.

The Ridiculous Water Feature and New House Saloon is back to being filled regularly (I always ease off the feeders in summer because of the natural bounty, but once fall migration hits, it's on!) and the is noticing.

Good thing I moved the wildlife cam to the badger hole I thought was the one being used. Behold! A picture of a badger! #WildlifeCam #Badger #backyardHabitat

Night time wildlife cam photo of a badger. It is facing the camera. It has a pointed head with a white stripe down the middle with dark stripes on either side and more white on either side of that. You can see the stripe from tip of nose to ab out mid shoulder. Its ears are up and its body is wide and low to the ground. You can see some of the field grass around it.

Red shouldered hawk landing in a water dish. From the wildlife cam. #BackyardHabitat #Birds

A red shouldered hawk just landing in a water bowl. It is facing left and its wings are fully extended upward and almost parallel to each other. Its tail is spread wide. It's chest and, body and legs are reddish brown, the lower inside edge of its left wing is the same color, the rest of the wings are white with black horizontal bars that are increasingly wide toward the tips of its wings. The bird is majestic. The surroundings are pale brown field grass with the trunks of very large coast live oaks. Blue sky is visible at the top of the picture.

When I added obedient plant (Physostegia virginiana), I didn't realize how many #insects use it for shelter. The flowers are perfectly sized for the sweat #bees. Not so much for bumblebees but this sleeping one went with it anyway. #NativePlants #BackyardHabitat

A metallic green sweat bee tucked inside the tube-shaped flower of an obedient plant. The bee is head pointing outwards of the pink flower with purple specks. The ends of the petals are floppier and droops attractively. More flowers and green leaves fill out the background. Two metallic green sweat bees sleeping upside-down inside the tube-shaped flowers of an obedient plant. The bees are heads pointing outwards of the pink flower with purple specks. The ends of the petals are floppier and droop attractively. The flowers are open in the.middle of a flower stalk. Finished and pending flowers are above and below this cluster on the stalk. Two metallic green sweat bees inside the tube-shaped flowers of an obedient plant. The two occupied pink and purple speckled flowers are vertically stacked, one above and one below. Both bees are heads pointing outwards but the upstairs bee is right-side up and the downstairs bee is hanging from the ceiling upside-down. The ends of the petals are floppier and droop attractively. Other flowers and one yellowing leaf fill out the close up picture. One sleeping bumblebee with its head inside the tube-shaped flower of an obedient plant. It is too big to fit completely inside so it has anchored legs on the flower below and stuffed through what upper body fits. Other pink and purple flowers and unopened buds fill out the photo.

Kate Bradbury’s latest book, "One Garden Against the World: In Search of Hope in a Changing Climate", shows how even the smallest garden can play a role in supporting wildlife. Adding little bits of cover, flowers, water, or switching to gentler, safer pest control can make a difference. Birds, for instance can benefit from even one welcoming garden in their migration path.

They all arrived to the #BackyardHabitat on a super windy day. Maybe for a snack break? #PollinatorGarden #Bloomscrolling

Three years on, the Cup Plants are really paying off in the backyard! Like a thriving little island, so fun to sit and watch. #Bloomscrolling #PollinatorGarden #PollinatorFriendly #BackyardHabitat #KillYourLawn

Looking up at the very top of a tall 10 foot clump of flowering bright yellow Cup Plants (Silphium perfoliatum), a herbacious perennial. There are at least 5 monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) visible among the flower heads. The flowers and butterflies are framed by blue sky and fluffy white clouds and tall evergreens, with a thin double power line visible in the background overhead.

A couple of years ago, we let a pumpkin rot in the backyard (our corgi ate part of it 😅). Last year vines grew, but this year those vines produced two full-sized pumpkins!

Went out to water early and met the chipmunk coming through the garage door with more peanuts.

Tried to convey, "Assets deposited in the garage are not liquid. You won't be able to access it as needed. And I don't want others coming in because of your riches" into my more pithy "C'mon, dude. Don't do that" plus eye contact. It considered me for a beat before heading into the garage.

I returned the peanuts I know of and hope it'll at least get back this principal. #BackyardHabitat #gardening

A pile of 20 or so of in-shell peanuts sitting on a concrete walkway. Behind it are the green leafy mounds of wild geranium and hardy mum plants in a wood-chip-mulched flower bed.

While working in the #garden, a chipmunk kept running by with peanut after peanut. Later on, I found the collection in a watering can inside the garage. Maybe they'll be back at it tomorrow and I can gently suggest a different location. #BackyardHabitat #gardening

20 or so in-shell peanuts at the bottom of a blue plastic watering can
