Hot and dry for enough days that I drew the rain barrel water down past the screeened points this weekend. This young robin is confused where its bath went, completely ignoring the water just behind.

I watched it hop around, looking downwards at the water below. It flew off and came back a couple of times. It will probably catch on soon. :) (The white bits are dried cottonwood fluffs. Not bird poop.) #BackyardWildlife #gardening #bird

A young robin perched on the rim of a rain barrel system made out of garbage cans and window screens. It is looking for water that sometimes is high enough to be above the screens that are secured across the open tops of the garbage cans- making for a great bird bath. There is clean water in the upside-down garbage can lid behind it but that's being ignored. A brick weighs down that lid.

Behind this scene are mounds of daylilly leaves and stands of wild bergamot stems.

This funny looking dog that comes to my backyard door every day: "Please sir, would you happen to have any spare fruit or vegetables?"

A couple weeks ago I planted a young black walnut tree in the backyard thinking that, when it matured, it would be a nice treat for future generations of squirrels.

Wasn't to be though, the little jerks came by and ate all the leaves and branches off it. Now it's just a dead stick in the ground and the prospect of all those future walnuts is gone.

There's a lesson here for humans, I feel.

We've got frog eggs in the birdbath. Probably Pacific chorus frogs.

An old metal fire pit with the hole plugged, filled with water and rocks and a ceramic fish for good measure. A large spiral of iron coils across the middle and a blob of well spaced black spots sits attached to it, just underwater, in the middle. Another blob of spots is barely visible where the coil enters the water again left of center.Closeup of the more obvious group of frog eggs, but they still mostly look like well spaced black spots hanging onto the iron.Closeup of the second group of frog eggs, also well spaced black spots, but there's also some larger white spots and things look like rust is leeching into the eggs.

Yesterday: Drained and moved some water barrels to a more permanent spot and found this Cope's gray tree frog (Hyla chrysocelis). I moved them over to the pond to get them out of the way.

Was on my way to photograph Great Horned Owl hatchlings when this squirrel popped up beside the trail β€” we locked eyes just long enough for the shot.
Keep the camera close.

A squirrel clings to a slim tree branch surrounded by young green leaves and faded spring blossoms. Captured in mid-pause, the squirrel is alert and framed by soft forest light. The photo was taken along a trail while en route to photograph Great Horned Owls nearby.

My invasive little fox squirrel friend has survived another winter, I see.

#Photography #Ottawa #BackyardWildlife

A fox squirrel in my backyard. Here he's eating a peanut with a walnut on stand-by. Fox squirrels are a bit larger than typical black or grey squirrels and a blend of black and white colour in various patterns. This one is mostly white but with black tail, paws, ears and around the eyes, nose and mouth.

Spiders have evidently roused from winter slumber - there's immense numbers of silk lines in the grass, all generally parallel with prevailing winds. I assume they're guide lines or test lines of some sort? Any idea which spiders are responsible?

Internet searches just bring up pest control options or orb-weaver info, neither of which are what I'm looking for.

Maybe @nev knows?

Came across this little creature crawling on my strawberry plants, found out it’s a North American wheel bug nymph, which is a type of assassin #bug. They feed on other #insects, caterpillars, etc. so to the extent its prey are #garden pests these are a good thing to find on your plants.
