#Ballot

Oregon & Washington, which conduct their #elections almost entirely by mail, filed a separate lawsuit over the #ballot deadline, saying the #ExecutiveOrder could disenfranchise voters in their #states. When the lawsuit was filed, Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs noted that more than 300,000 ballots in the state arrived after Election Day in 2024.

#Trump’s March 25 #ExecutiveOrder sought to compel officials to require documentary proof of citizenship for everyone registering to #vote for federal #elections [you already must be a citizen], accept only mailed ballots received by Election Day & condition federal #election grant funding on #states adhering to the new #ballot deadline.

@BikingViking

"At times, it seems like #liberals are overcomplicating things with these postmortems, but I think mapping out a rather simple sequence of events can help explain how last year played out:

1. #Democrats win the presidency in 2020 with help from some states’ expanding #ballot access and contributing to the largest pool of #voters in U.S. history. (Note that Joe Biden won without cozying up to “#manosphere” podcasters or abandoning progressive principles like racial justice to win.)

2. #Republicans introduce hundreds of voter suppression measures, many of which are enacted and make it harder for Americans to vote.

3. With fewer people voting in 2024 than voted in 2020, Donald Trump wins."

Damn I’m lucky to live in Vermont.

Missouri Republicans are trying to repeal the right to abortion in the state by asking voters to counteract a measure they approved on the ballot last year to legalize it.

#Republicans are trying to toss out ballots from voters who followed the rules and submitted on time.

A #voter can't control postal delays after they mail their #ballot. That shouldn’t cost anyone their vote.

Every valid ballot should be counted — it’s just common sense.

@SonofaGeorge @ZenHeathen @CStamp @northernlights @pinhman @gemelliz Some countries sort not by name but according to the parties' results at the most recent election, followed by new parties in order of registration. If a newbie gets the signatures from citizens earlier, they rank higher on the #ballot.

Then, parties can (and do) advertise: like "Vote list 7", so electors know to look for the 7th option on the ballot. That really helps the vision impaired or illiterate when they #vote

@SonofaGeorge @ZenHeathen @northernlights @CStamp @pinhman @gemelliz PS: Another reason not to use #ballot #scanners is the massive cost of transporting them to the many fly-in communities we have in Canada. And then bringing them back. As you always need a backup, that means at least two machines per community. Wasteful.

Keep in mind: federal #elections are simple but huge. 1 choice per #ballot. Easy & quick to count. But over 340 parallel elections. Candidate representatives & individual voters can watch the count. An open process.

Municipal elections usually have many choices per ballot. Those are complex, but small elections. Fewer scanners you may rent, fewer staff to train, but lots of choices to count.

#scanners don't scale well.

@SonofaGeorge @ZenHeathen @northernlights @CStamp @pinhman @gemelliz #Ballot #scanners are expensive. You'd have to buy tens of thousands of them, ship them, train staff how to use, provide redundant electricity, handle the data storage afterwards (or provide and secure data connections), ship them back to warehouses where they would then sit for years, rinse repeat. All the while protecting them against tampering both in the field, during transport, during storage.

An insane undertaking.

@SonofaGeorge @ZenHeathen @northernlights @CStamp @pinhman @gemelliz Doug, the feds have noticed #ballot scanners. They are not good.

They are s l o w. I've worked an election (CRD, BC) where voters had to go to the machine, ballot in hand. That created the longest lineup in any election I have ever seen. After making their choice, Viet had to wait in line over 90 minutes. There were several scanners, but they are finnicky. Some voters had used their own pens - doesn't work.

NEW: 90% of #Texans believe that private school vouchers should be put on the #ballot.

But #GregAbbott is trying to kill an amendment that would let the people decide.

What are you afraid of,
@GregAbbott_TX?

縮短 TLS certificate 的最長效期的投票 SC-081

在 Lobsters 上看到縮短 TLS certificate 最長效期的投票消息:「Mandatory short duration TLS certificates are probably coming soon」。 文章裡面有提到 mailing list 上的投票:「Voting Period Begins: SC-081v3: Introduce Schedule of Reducing Validity and Data Reuse Periods」,投票期間已經結束了,所以剛好可以算一下票數。 Certificate Consumers 端: YES (4):Google、Apple、Mozilla、Microsoft Certificate Issuer 端: YES…
