#Beltane or #Bealtaine is the #Gaelic #May Day #festival, marking the beginning of #summer. It is traditionally held on 1 May, or about midway between the spring equinox and summer solstice.

Today is also Samhain in the Southern Hemisphere, a day to honor the dead and the end of harvest season.

May the gods be with you as well.

[A MESSAGE FROM PARLIAMENT]

We wish to inform you that today is Bealtaine in the Northern Hemisphere. An Ancient Celtic festival that celebrates the beginning of Summer and life itself.

May the gods be with you.

My Bealtaine altar. A White candle in a brass candle holder burns on the left. A yellow rose (Athur Bell) sits in a thin glass bottle decorated with a floral design on the right. Some crystals sit on a circular grey stone object in the middle. All sits on a blue and green meterial cloth and there is a yellow ribbon draped amongst.

May we be protected in this warm year, and may our crops grow proud.

So begins the warm year,
the air becomes clear
and the primroses appear
while the Other Folk are near
the feast to which we adhere; —

Bring flame for the bonfire,
within is the protection we desire
growing as the smoke rises higher.

Joined with cattle we walk around
the burning ash upon the ground; —
Incantations said will sound
the wind until the fire is drowned
in appeasing the Folk of the Mound.

Supply life to the hearth
as In Dagda upon the earth
for the soil shall give birth
to all it is worth,
holding grand mirth.

Immense is the flame bright; —
May security be in form of the light.

                                                                        Bealtaine

Historic buildings are visible in the background under a clear blue sky.A peaceful pathway lined with trees on both sides, featuring a green park sign and a few street lamps. The grass is lush and well-maintained, with a clear blue sky in the background.

To mark the 30th anniversary of the #Bealtaine Festival, #Transport for #Ireland (TFI) and the Office of Public Works (OPW) are offering free entry to selected heritage sites for Senior Citizens who travel using TFI Local Link services during May 2025. By presenting a Local Link ticket or Travel Pass, seniors can enjoy free access to iconic sites such as #Glendalough, #Clonmacnoise, #Ennis Friary and the Blasket Centre. The initiative promotes sustainable travel and cultural engagement, and complements a nationwide programme of Bealtaine events celebrating creativity and the arts in later life.

#FairyTaleTuesday: `#Bealtaine folkways emphasized cattle: garlands of marigolds – the “Bealtaine shrub” – were placed around cow’s necks; wells were “milked” with skimmers to gather the first water of May; special dishes like syllabub (fresh milk and whiskey) were concocted. The Irish celebrated, but an undercurrent of caution ran through Bealtaine, for cattle are most at risk of disease in springtime. An ancient Gaelic blessing asked protection for “all kine and crops, all flocks and corn, from Bealtaine eve to Samhain eve, from sea to sea and every river mouth, from wave to wave, and base of waterfall.” The twin Bealtaine fires were believed to have prophylactic effect, so cattle were driven between them with prayers for their safety.` #Celtic
