Bloody-nosed Beetle (Timarcha tenebricosa) - a large and flightless beetle that can often be seen in the daytime, especially in early spring. They feed on members of the bedstraw family, and there is plenty of Lady's Bedstaw and Hedge Bedstraw in the field I found this one in.
They get their common name from a red liquid they produce when threatened. I don't tend to threaten beetles, so I've never actually seen it!

A Glow-worm (Lampyris noctiluca) larva on the outskirts of #Bath yesterday. The adult female resembles the larvae, but the males look much more like a typical beetle. In the lanes around the outskirts of Bath, away from street lights and built-up areas, you can often see the green glow of the females as they attempt to attract the males. The larvae feed on slugs and snails; the adults don't eat at all.

I dug over a part of the garden that had been overgrown (ow my back) and this pretty little Ladybug showed up to inspect the freshly dug up soil. I hope it managed to evade all the birds that came to do the same because it kinda sticks out 😅

A surprising find today - the larva of a Black-headed Cardinal Beetle (Pyrochroa coccinea), under the bark of a log in a log pile at Newton St Loe, near #Bath today. The beetle is widespread, but not common. I have only ever found 3 adults before. The larva can be told from the more common Red-headed Cardinal by the absence of lateral teeth of the spines at the rear.
