An intact Great Koala National Park reduces fire risks

Some mainstream media, politicians and the logging industry see Australian flora and fauna as one big ' firebomb' that needs logging urgently.

"...A logged forest is at much greater risk of burning at higher severity than intact forests that have not been logged. Logged forests are at significantly greater risk of high-severity wildfire than intact (unlogged) forests." David Lindenmayer, Ecologist

The destruction of native forests

"The independent review of the EPBC Act, conducted by Graeme Samuel in 2020, described the exemption for RFAs from federal environment laws as an untenable "loophole". The Greens, who have been demanding a complete ban on native forest logging, want to end the exemption of RFAs from the EPBC Act immediately. Changes to the EPBC Act will be before the Senate on Wednesday..."

Deforestation and no regeneration

"If you go down to the forests today, you’re in for a big surprise (mass deforestation) .
The forest has failed to regenerate after being logged. More and more logged areas no longer support trees where they once did."

"Forests that have not regenerated after logging represent a clear form of deforestation. Deforestation is a major global issue driving both escalating climate change and biodiversity loss. This is why Australia signed international agreements to both halt deforestation and to prevent biodiversity loss. And yet, this problem is evident in our own backyard."

Deforestation harms profits

"Global investors managing over $3 trillion in assets called on governments on Monday to stop and reverse deforestation and ecosystem degradation by 2030, in a statement signed ahead of a U.N. climate conference. As investors, we are increasingly concerned about the material financial risks that tropical deforestation and nature loss pose to our portfolios. Deforestation undermines the natural systems that global markets rely on - from climate regulation to food and water security."

The destruction of koala habitat shows ‘total failure’ of nature laws

"More clearing of koala habitat has been approved under Australia’s nature laws in 2025 so far than in any other year since the marsupial was listed as a threatened species, according to an analysis by the Australian Conservation Foundation. The very law meant to protect nature is so poorly enforced that it has failed to stop nearly 2.3m hectares of likely koala habitat from being bulldozed and cut down."

"The analysis found native forest logging, particularly in NSW, was also contributing to koala habitat loss, with 391,170 ha of likely koala habitat destroyed by logging operations over the 12-year period."

NSW forestry agency should be shut down for repeatedly breaking law, critics argue

"Professor David Heilpern, a former court magistrate, claims the NSW Forestry Corporation is no longer fit for purpose and should be disbanded. A former magistrate and one of Australia’s most experienced scientists have launched an extraordinary attack on the New South Wales government’s logging agency, describing it as effectively a “criminal organisation” that should be shut down after a string of court convictions."

"The corporation has been convicted of more than a dozen environmental offences, including a judgment in the land and environment court last year that found the agency was likely to reoffend and had poor prospects of rehabilitation. They get caught, investigated, prosecuted, a criminal conviction, a fine – which the public pays – and they carry on and do it all again."

“There is just no integrity, accountability or justice in this model of operation.”

“For the Forestry Corporation, breaking the law and harming the environment and wildlife has become like a game of charades played under the protection of the state."

The great koala - glider national park - logging an environmentally significant area

"The Minns Labor government promised to create a koala national park before the state election more than two years ago, but has not taken a decision on the boundaries and has allowed logging to continue. Between April and July 2024, the surveys detected greater gliders at 82 sites. The government’s analysis estimated the planned park has between 29,693 and 44,211 gliders, with a mean estimate of 36,483."

“...Logging should cease in all state forest areas identified as containing greater gliders.”

"The logging industry is finding ways to get around the so-called ban."

"A loophole in the law banning Victoria's native timber harvesting means logging projects can still go ahead as the state government passes project approval responsibility to local councils."

"How could it be that a local council would have the expertise, the biological and ecological expertise, to approve logging in an area? When you log and regenerate an area of native forest … that same area of forest becomes much more flammable for a prolonged period of time," Professor Lindenmayer said. "I don't think that we should be adding that extra fire burden for rural and regional people to have to deal with."

Human-mediated extirpation of wildlife through logging

"Before industrial logging in south-west British Columbia, there were nearly 1,000 spotted owls in the old-growth forests. But they have vanished in recent decades, victims of habitat destruction. Activists have tried in vain to hold the government to account, alleging protected species laws have failed to prevent the extirpation of the owls."

"Efforts to revive the population have failed, with a pair of owls released from the breeding program dying within months. The lone female in the wild is also believed to have died."

The Greens are calling for a moratorium on clearing koala habitat and an end to native forest logging.
"You can’t save koalas while continuing to destroy their homes."

"At a rally in Coffs Harbour today, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said the Greens would put the environment at the top of the federal election campaign agenda and in any power-sharing parliament. The NSW government promised to protect this precious koala habitat as a national park, yet destruction from logging has only increased."

Logging in forest earmarked for koala national park increasing under NSW Labor, analysis finds
“Far from protecting the great koala national park, they are accelerating its degradation."

"Logging of native forest in the proposed great koala national park (GKNP) in northern New South Wales has intensified since the Minns government took office, according to new analysis by conservation advocates."

The report, which the state’s forestry corporation disputes, found 7,185 hectares (17,700 acres) were logged within the promised park in the 21 months since the March 2023 state election. Dailan Pugh, the president of the North East Forest Alliance, said this was about 8.4% of the area identified for potential logging and included habitat for endangered koalas and another 37 threatened species....They’re still logging areas they’ve identified as high density for koalas,” Pugh said."

How a mayor beat the loggers to turn the place green again
Could Bellingen become a “green municipality”?

"A region battered by predatory logging and ranching...With its forest-gobbling ranchers, bootleg loggers and dodgy sawmill operators, this sprawling township the size of Israel was a big red flag."

“For decades, Paragominas was one of the Amazon’s epicentres of deforestation and timber extraction. That changed in 2008, with the municipal environmental pact, which reduced deforestation by 80%,” says Beto Veríssimo, co-founder of Imazon, a rainforest-based thinktank. ..Controlling deforestation turned the township into a magnet for investment and economic growth.”

As they are logging and clear-cutting the koala forests around Bellingen

"While local perspectives can be misleading, from a global perspective, clear-cutting and clear-cutting-like interventions are endangering the climate and biodiversity. Allowing trees to age, preserving deadwood, and allowing natural regeneration with adapted game populations would have a positive effect on the climate and help mitigate forest damage. This would be active climate and biodiversity protection and should be promoted politically."

"Politicians have a duty to achieve the climate targets and to impose clear obligations on enterprises."

"Businesses, including the forestry and timber industry, are well-informed about the climate and biodiversity crises and must be held accountable for faulty conduct."

"The containment of environmental crime immediately needs clear laws with effective enforcement. Short-sighted economic activities at the expense of future generations and beyond planetary capacities should be made illegal and punished."

"No more delaying, no more wait-and see, no more blame-shifting, no more beating around the bush—we need ambitious action in the right direction. Compliance with the Paris Climate Agreement is the narrow pathway into a future that might resemble the present. Will and efforts to preserve the climate and biodiversity roughly as we know them must be significantly strengthened. Reliable goals and ways of achieving climate neutrality as quickly as possible are the political order of the day. Forests should be no longer the third largest carbon emitter, but part of the solution that would reduce our current emission by around 15%."

NSW's native forest logging industry ruled not 'economically viable'.

"The recommendation was made by the NSW Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) in its triennial analysis of the government-owned logging company Forestry Corporation of NSW."

"It found Forestry Corporation's native timber operation had been steadily losing money over the past decade, in part due to delivering timber to sawmills for less than the cost of providing it."

"It also noted concerns about logging making bushfires worse and damaging threatened species' habitat."

"The revelation comes the same week that Forestry Corporation released its annual report, which shows it suffered a $29 million loss in its native logging division in the 2022-2023 financial year. Studies have suggested shutting the industry could bring net economic benefits to the economy"

Koala deaths though road and highway crashes

“There were five koala deaths on this section of the Bruxner Highway in August alone and any protection measure we can take to reduce that toll is worth taking. A section of the highway between Lismore and Casino will have the speed reduced from 100km to 80km in a bid to reduce koala deaths...Members of the public regularly call us about koalas in roadside trees, which causes sleepless nights wondering if they will be the next ones hit that we have to pick up.”

There seems to be a lack of impact data on the 'dispersed' koalas of the 'upgraded' Gleniffer 'Highway' through the industrially logged forests of Bellingen/Gleniffer. The 50s mobility design has achieved its goal, more traffic is speeding now. Meanwhile, photos proliferate of 'koalas in roadside trees'.
