This is a quite extraordinary piece of misrepresentation. So far from being a demilitarised colony provided large numbers of volunteers for the in both world wars . The causes of the are best set out by - who lived through it . Not enough was done quickly enough to avert it - and the problem was more to do with both a shortage of shipping worldwide and competition for food within the native population.

If after reading my posts in this thread, you are still doubtful that I know what I’m talking about when I speak of , then you are not paying attention.

If you can’t comprehend the exigencies of a World War and cannot put the world security stakes in context when you talk about , you are not worth engaging further.

I have repeatedly told you that it’s OK to disagree with me, but you seem bent on making me agree with you.

>> Even was an exigency of War

I was born in and lived there for a quarter century.

Even I know did not use Bengal Famine as a weapon of war against Bengal like used in , and like is using it now ➡️ reuters.com/business/putin-all

Earlier, I said you are entitled to your opinon, and you are. But you should not distort historical facts to suit your opinion.

Were you all aware of this podcast series on the history and memory of the 1943 Bengal Famine? It's superb. #history #podcasts #bbc #india #bengal #bengalfamine #wwii #ww2 #famine bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001wr57

@EdibleFuchsia @jonben Yes, I listened to that too. On the one hand, great that it was on at all, and it was interesting, on the other: i wish they had gone further with it. The choice to focus on lived experience rather than causes (!); the “balanced” discussion of Churchill (getting on only Hastings for that!); and, as ever, a lot of White Saviourism. And yes, as you say, only that one instance, not the wider picture. #Famines #BengalFamine #Colonialism

Three million British subjects died in the Bengal Famine during the second world war in India.

80 years on, Kavita Puri has recorded conversations with some of the last survivors of the famine. It's fascinating and moving.

Three Million, on BBC Sounds.

The Blame – and the Shame – of Three Million Bengali Dead

The BBC audio series 'Three Million' presents the famine as living history rather than a distant episode.

In Mrinal Sen's আকালের সন্ধানে [Akaler Sandhane / In Search of Famine] (1982), a Calcutta film crew arrives in a small Bengal town to make a film about the 1943 #BengalFamine. Initially, their arrival sparks joy and wonder but while filming, the participants – travelling back and forth between 43 and 80, Calcutta and rural Bengal, and reality and re-enactment – face the one constant, #famine.
