#Bergen bus station in 1969, drawn by Hans W. and Rolf Rohde.

This is the large entrance hall of what is Bergen storsenter today. Back then it was just a calm place to collect yourself while waiting for the bus.

The area has been a central hub for all things transport since the 1800s, but the bus station itsellf has been here since 1955, although it has been gradually expanded with a mall and light rail transit since then.

A spark (A #kicksled, but literal translation is "kick"), the preferred vehicle for the few days when ice or hard snow covers everything. Like here, in Klaus Hanssens vei in the late 20s.

The kicksled's definitive records was in Sweden in the 1870s, and the "modern" one like this (iron legs, and flexible runners) was only as recent as 1909, so this was modern #micromobility transport!

These days, salting and sanding and plowing of cold roads makes these harder to use in winter – barely scraping by with one factory that still make them in Norway.

Two children in woolen winter gear and a kicksled – a small sled consisting of a chair mounted on a pair of flexible metal runners that extend backward to about twice the chair's length. One child sitting on the "chair" of the sled, and one standing behind the handles, ready to get in motion. Both looking at the camera. In the background, mountains.

I was going to put another picture here, but then I heard the bells of Johanneskirken (St. Johns #church), and changed my mind!

A neogothic church finished in 1894, it was still quite new here, in the early 1900s. It was drawn by architect Herman Major Backer. It is the largest church space in the city, seating 690 people.

It is sat at the top of a hill, at the end of an axis going straight through the central city of #Bergen, and is visible from large parts of the area.

If you could build a , you could cut travel time between and (2nd and 3rd most populous cities in ) by 40 minutes

Problem: it would be the longest and deepest undersea road tunnel ever

Well, Norway's building it

27 km long (17 miles), 392 m deep (1,286 feet)

It's called fastforbindelse: Rogaland Fixed Link

started 2018. Estimated completion 2033

Cost? About $2.4 billion (?!)

"Indeed," the Norwegian chuckles, talking to a tourist, "polar bears walk the streets everywhere in Norway!"

Well, in 1953, there _was_ a #PolarBear loose in #Bergen. Coming from the North, and supposed to be transferred to a ship going to a zoo Germany, mommy bear escaped and swam around the port for a while, before being recaptured and sent on – along with her two cubs. Quite the spectacle!

The traditional fish market in #Bergen sometime at the turn of the century.

Not that much activity in the middle of winter, I will grant you that – but fresh fish and goods have been sold here since 1730, when the inner bay was filled with stone masses to build up a market square.

The Old City Hall of #Bergen. Or, at this point, in 1921, just The City Hall.

But it was quite old even at that point! Originally built in 1558 as a residence for fier (lensherre) Christian Valkendorff, already from 1561 it began seeing use as a magistrate meeting place, and was given to the city as a city hall in 1568.

After many fires and refurbishings over the centuries, it got its current look in 1885, and was used by city council until the new "sky scraper" nearby was done in 1974.

Ah, the theatre!

Den Nationale Scene (The National Stage), here from the late 1920s, is the largest #theatre in #Bergen and one of the oldest permanent theatres in Norway. Opened in 1909, the neoclassical building took on the world. Its original premiere was Ludvig Holberg's Erasmus Montanus.

Throughout the early 20th century DNS nurtured talents, cementing its role in shaping Norway’s artistic identity. It is seen here from Ole Bulls plass, the plaza and street named for the violinist and stage patron who initiated the original city theatre in 1850s.

It is still a theatre, and has been one of the state theatres of Norway since the 1990s. The current house has three stages – a main stage, and two smaller stages. Last refurbished in 2001 to almost its original shape, it is now closed down for a year to refurbish and upgrade.
