“So the mortgage interest deduction, this is an entitlement. Anyone with a home can deduct the cost of their mortgage from their tax bill. Now that costs the government about $193 billion a year.
We spend about $53 billion on direct housing assistance to the needy. So that's like public housing, reducing vouchers, everything we do to try to help poor families face the housing crisis that is far, far, far less than the amount we spend as a nation. Just supporting homeowners that don't need the support because most of the mortgage interest deduction just goes to the top 20% of income earners.”
