You’re Designed for Extremes

I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot.
I wish you were either one or the other!
Revelation 3:15

There are three approaches to life with God: All In; All Out; and, in the middle, between those, a third approach. This third approach is actually a range—it encompasses every approach between the two extremes. Many of us take the third approach.

You’re Magnetic

Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?
Mark 2:16

God loves us—just as we are, right now. Wow. That’s kind of difficult to accept, isn’t it? I mean, it’s hard to feel worthy of that love, with all our mistakes, our imperfections. Don’t we need to be perfect and holy too, just as he is, before he can love us? No, brother, he loves us—just as we are, right now.

Shut the gate behind you

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”

Matthew 7:13-14

“It’s hard but worth it.”

Q: Have you found the gate?

Tertullian was an African writer, church father, and the 1st to use “Trinity” in Latin. He reproves the amphitheater. The guilty deserve punishment. One must not delight in blood and cruelty. We must truly grieve at the punishment of another.

Is the spirit of the amphitheatre alive today? Does the very word do more to evoke memories of great cinema, than moral revulsion?

How can you grieve for those in prison today?

"We will now look for a reproof of the amphitheatre also from the Scriptures.... If we be such as we are reported to be, let us delight ourselves with human blood. 'It is a good thing when the guilty are punished! Who but a guilty man will deny this ? And yet an innocent man cannot rejoice in the punishment of another, for it more befitteth the innocent to grieve, because that a man like unto himself hath become so guilty as to be so cruelly punished."

Madison Clinton Peters, pastor in NYC, writes on people in the slums. Needing to beg puts people at risk of a cycle of prison and “unhappy careers”. Peters doesn’t excuse the crimes, but warns “a Christian public” of judgment by God for their neglect.

Don’t we hear different judgment today, one directed at those who talk too much of poverty, or “excuse” crimes by pointing to conditions? How can you help those in desperation?
