Giant Ivy Covered Trellis Biltmore Estate Ashville North Carolina

The giant trellis and ivy-covered pergola near the gardens of the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, is a breathtaking architectural feature that seamlessly blends nature with the estate’s grand design. Stretching alongside the Walled Garden, this ornate stone and iron trellis is adorned with cascading ivy and climbing vines, creating a lush, shaded retreat for visitors.

Designed in harmony with the Gilded Age elegance of Biltmore, the trellis provides a picturesque walkway where dappled sunlight filters through the foliage, casting intricate patterns on the stone paths below. The ivy, meticulously maintained yet left to grow in natural beauty, enhances the romantic, timeless charm of the estate’s landscape.

As part of the Frederick Law Olmsted-designed gardens, this structure offers a serene transition between the formal flowerbeds of the Walled Garden and the more naturalistic plantings of the Shrub Garden and Conservatory beyond.

The Grand Staircase and Chandelier at Biltmore Estate: A Stunning Architectural Marvel

The Grand Staircase of the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, is one of the most breathtaking architectural elements of America’s largest private home. Designed by Richard Morris Hunt, this limestone spiral staircase gracefully winds its way upward in a stunning display of craftsmanship and elegance. Each step, carved from a single block of stone, is cantilevered from the wall, creating a floating effect that adds to the grandeur of the space.

At the heart of the staircase hangs the estate’s most iconic light fixture—a massive wrought-iron chandelier. This four-story, 1,700-pound masterpiece was crafted in the late 19th century and suspended from a single iron chain. Its design, a fusion of intricate scrollwork and Gothic-inspired details, perfectly complements the opulence of the surrounding space.

The Library Biltmore Estate Asheville North Carolina

This is the Library in the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, one of the most awe-inspiring rooms in the mansion. A testament to George Washington Vanderbilt II’s love for literature, this grand space houses over 10,000 books from his personal collection, many of which date back to the 15th century.

The two-story library is framed by richly carved wood paneling and features an ornate wrought-iron balcony, accessible by a hidden spiral staircase. The ceiling mural, painted by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, was originally from a Venetian palace and depicts an allegorical scene of the arts and sciences, adding to the room's European elegance.

A massive fireplace, intricate gilded lamps, plush red velvet draperies, and elegant furniture enhance the room’s opulence, making it a warm and inviting space for reading and conversation. Large arched windows flood the space with natural light, highlighting the craftsmanship of the Renaissance-style décor.

A large glass installation full of individual elements that suggest plants, flowers, and shrubs. All are individually brightly colored representing the full spectrum of colors, but mainly primary colors. In general, the elements are a single color, but may be enhanced by one or more accent colors. Shapes include tall wavy slender stalks widening into leaflike structures, textured orbs, wavy concave discs, clusters of spikes, and a big cylindrical structure consisting of a dense thicket of curly stems. The cylindrical structure is two meters tall and about a meter wide. the curly stems are directed horizontally except for the top where they extend upward and outward.

The whole installation is on a flat black glass that reflects the elements. Strong lighting is from above.

A section of a complex colorful art glass installation lit strongly from above. In the foreground is an element where bright red and reddish clear smooth branches arise from a single location like a fern. To the left are several curvy individual yellow stems that form red flattened but wavy flowers at the end. These are over a meter (yard) tall. Behind these is a thick shrub-like element made up of many spiraling curvy branches arising out of a vertical "trunk" that is not visible the branches are so thick. The bottom half has blue branches and the top half has bright yellow branches that point outward and also upward. At the base of all this is black glass that captures the reflection of many of the elements. The background is a black wall.

A variety of types of glass art, lighted from above and against a dark background. In the front lower foreground is a blue orb with white blotchy patterning that makes it look like it is moving around. There are long vertical slender flower-like structures in bright purple and aqua. Other tall flower-like structures are clear dark blue and open with trumpet-like undulations. Bright green spikey "shrubs", yellow flat wide but rippling structures are also seen in back of the orb and stems.

Three types of glass art against a black background. At the bottom, an orange roundish 'flower' that is flat with ripples and subtle lines enhancing the effect. On the right is a group of three yellow and red slender stemmed figures ending in an enlarged simple flower-like structure. In the rear of these is a taller complex structure made out of dozens of slender curling and spiraling 'stems' of glass. The glass of bottom half is blue, dark and light, while the glass at the top half is yellow, spiraling outward and upward.

A large room of chateauesque architecture, with meter-long off-white tile floor and decorated with many green potted plants, some large and tropical. The concave top is covered with glass panes between thick light brown wood accents and supports. A center section extends even higher with long vertical glass panes. This section has ornate carved wooden decorations and details.

There is a round table in the center with a tall vase, and a small table and chair visible and rugs amongst the greenery along the sides. Eight large metal lanterns with yellow panes hang from the ceiling in a circular pattern, reflecting the shape of the room. The back wall is visible and is made up of stone arches that allow access to a hallway.
