"The combined biomass movement of all wild #birds, land #arthropods and wild land #mammals is about one-sixth that of humans walking and about 40 times smaller than all the biomass movement of humans. The biomass movement of marine animals, which we find to be the living world’s largest, has been halved since 1850 due to industrial fishing and whaling, while human biomass movement has increased by about 40-fold."

2025 sees intense wildfire year in the Northern Hemisphere

In 2025, the #Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (#CAMS) continued to track #wildfire #emissions worldwide, offering detailed insights into fire intensity, associated emissions and atmospheric impacts. Several parts of the world saw significant wildfire activity, with record high emissions in #Europe, and #Canada recording its second-highest annual total of #carbon emissions from wildfires since the start of the CAMS fire emissions dataset in 2003. CAMS estimates that global wildfires and #biomass burning released approximately 1380 megatonnes of carbon by the end of November 2025 (compared with 1850 and 1940 megatonnes of carbon in the January-November and annual respective totals of 2024), with Canada contributing 263 megatonnes of that total.

<img alt="Study Shows Waste Cardboard Could be Effective for Power Generation" src="https://www.goodnewspost.co.uk/content/images/2025/11/pexels-karola-g-4498135-1.jpg" /><p><strong>By Science Correspondent </strong></p><h2 id="engineers-at-the-university-of-nottingham-say-waste-cardboard-could-be-put-to-work-as-a-fuel-for-large-scale-biomass-power-generation">Engineers at the University of Nottingham say waste cardboard could be put to work as a fuel for large-scale biomass power generation.</h2><h2 id="id"> </h2><p>Their study, published in&#xa0;<em>Biomass and Bioenergy</em>, is the first to give a detailed picture of how cardboard behaves as a fuel and to offer a practical way of assessing its makeup.</p><p>The team found that cardboard differs from more common biomass fuels in several ways.</p><p>It has&#xa0;<em>&#x201c;lower carbon content, reduced heating value, and a high prevalence of calcium carbonate fillers, particularly in printed grades.&#x201d;</em>&#xa0;Calcium carbonate is added during manufacturing to improve stiffness and appearance, but it turns into ash when burned, which can affect boiler performance.</p><p>To address this, the engineers have developed a new thermogravimetric method to measure calcium carbonate levels, describing it as&#xa0;<em>&#x201c;a practical tool for fuel assessment for cardboards.&#x201d;</em></p><figure class="kg-card kg-image-card"><img alt="Study Shows Waste Cardboard Could be Effective for Power Generation" class="kg-image" he
