"When frogs dream, lichens smile. Ecological connections were explored anew. Artists recorded conversations of small creatures. People sat fascinated in flower meadows. Children laughed in the forest with knobbly mosses and chatty ants."

Disover my virtual exhibit of #BiodiversityShrines - about finds in a fictional future: cronenburg.net/biodiversity/
It was a real exhibit, now saved online.

A hanging collage in green, white and orange tones with natural finds. The most important parts of this abstract collage are wooden sticks (one with a bright orange lichen), a real lichen with embroidery stitches in silk yarn, a small porcellaine frog and a historic illustration of water plants. The zoom on the abstract collage shows the two wooden sticks and the embroidered real grey lichen on a background of textile scraps and intuitive embroidery. One stick is lemon tree without bark, the stick with bark is cobered with a bright orange lichen. This colour is repeated in the stitches on the real grey lichen.

@joncounts The #PassengerPigeon is part of my #BiodiversityShrines - an art project to think about rare or extinct species.

A vintage cigarette tin box (symbol of how fast we "smoke" species away) with a pigeon-like, emerald-green form. The background is an old German article "Von Milliarden blieb keine mehr" (from billions no single pigeon remained) about the extinction. The abstract pigeon looks very precious, glossy like a real emerald.Zoom on the "pigeon body" before it was installed. It looks like a real emerald, partly included in a rock. But it is all burnt plastic waste from an illegal dump in a nature park, found at a stream bank.

On the way home earlier, I paid attention to the mountain roads with their bends, the cyclists and hikers, and at the same time, recognised a #dragonfly at the edge of the forest. Today I'm really happy with my brain. 😄 #biodiversity #BiodiversityShrines #AtelierTetebrec

Recycling DIY: Dragon fly made with glass beads for the head and eyes, and a violet thin body, a sparkling textile material. The wings are cut out from a transparent plastic package and have a textile net, coming from a scrap.

My Shrine Of Ceres, part of the Biodiversity Shrine Project. A two-part shrine in the shape of Gothic church windows, built three-dimensionally from cardboard painted white with gesso. On the left, an embroidered ear of grain on blue fabric. On the right, a real one on golden fabric. Decorated with folklore braids and showing traditional Ukrainian embroidery patterns with tree-of-life symbols.

To all the pain monsters living and munching in vertebrae: This is your shrine. 🤭

PS: Thanks to @eclectech who showed me that *everything* can have eyes. 😁

An animal vertebra looks like a smiling face from above. For emphasis, it has red glass beads as eyes and a red Asian lucky charm bead with lettering as a tongue. The monster is surrounded at the top and bottom by forget-me-nots in perlage technique - all together in a rectangular box trimmed with beige-golden sequins. Everything beams in brightness and good vibes.

I'm happy like a small child to have found these #treasures at our international #embroidery festival! So great for my #BiodiversityShrines!

Even more important are the talks: With an author of embroidery books who sold these "scraps", and the employee of the #naturepark was just as enthusiastic as I was and asked me if I would like to join her in organising children's courses with #handicrafts on #biodiversity. Oh yesss! 🥰

#Microscopic for #SciArtSeptember insights in my #BiodiversityShrines project. I had a real exhibition, still online with photos here: cronenburg.net/reliquaires/ In calmer times, I want to make more ... the material is waiting. But I need a lot of inner peace and patience for this kind of work. @embroidery @fiberarts @fibrearts

Zoom on embroidered moss in different green, brown and whitish shades done using French knot stitch. The sporophytes are made from fragile green wire and the capsules are tiny brown and green glass seed beads. The moss was applied on the bark of a 150-year-old oak that had died from the terrible droughts in France.A mix of nature findings and embroidery for a collage: A whitish real (dried) lichen is fixed on grey fabric with precious golden brown silk threads. From the distance, it looks as if the lichen is blooming.A small and very thin piece of wild cherry bark is applied on gauze and then on yellowish paper. I used the holes made by beetles for inspiration: It looked like the writing from an unknown culture. My asemic writing is stitched with silver thread into the holes. Now the bark looks like a part of an ancient scroll. For work like this, I need a magnifier: a beetle leg. At the left is a photo of the real beetle - at the right my artificial leg. I used the thinnest wire and wrapped it in the real proportions with black sewing thread. These legs were later fixed on the paper art body.

It is no longer possible for me to make "normal" #art. The #exhibition of my #BiodiversityShrines is meant to be #activism but also to encourage people to change their perspective through the #sciFi #fiction #storytelling. For me, it was a project to learn to deal with my #EcoGrief. And it's a hell of a lot of fun! In #Alsace with a QR code leading to the #virtualVisit in Fr/En/De: ▶️ cronenburg.net/reliquaires/ You'll see moss! #biodiversity #climateActivism #biodiversityLoss #butterflies #mosstodon

The object is called a Supplication Stick. It's embroidered moss and lichen on a piece of bark from a 200-yr-old oak. More on my website.

🧵 1/2 Preparing the texts for my exhibition of the #BiodiversityShrines feels so cringe! 😱 The texts are written in 2043, like this one (still uncorrected):
"The exhibit is probably a so-called supplication stick, as it was widely made at that time. People who did not want to despair of the indifference towards #ClimateChange and the #extinction of species made the supplication sticks and passed them around in a circle in a #ritual.

Showing the whole shrine. It is formed like a Gothic double window of a church. The main area consists of rectangular recesses with the ears of corn, blue on the left, and golden on the right. A machine-embroidered border with flowers runs lengthwise down the centre, and a brick-red braid runs along the sides. The shrine is painted with gesso. Under the gesso, traditional embroidery patterns in red and black become visible in the arches and at the lower edge. More on the details in the other photos.A real dried ear of corn on golden fabric in a rectangular recess of a cardboard shrine. The edges are lined with fine white braid, and the shrine is painted with white gesso. An embroidered ear of corn on blue fabric in a rectangular recess of a cardboard shrine. The edges are lined with fine white braid, and the shrine is painted with white gesso. The shrine is formed like a double gothic church window. In the upper window arches is a red and black symbolic pattern of two birds at the life tree, surrounded by flowers. The blue and golden colour of the background for the grain are connotations of the Ukrainian flag and the inhumane blocking of grain exports by Russia, which is calculated to plunge countless people into hunger. The birds are a traditional Ukrainian embroidery pattern symbolising fertility and abundance. They peek out from under the gesso.

Finally, the idea for my #exhibition! " #Archaeologists made a revolutionary #discovery in 2033. In the vicinity of pottery shards from the late Betschdorf and Soufflenheim cultures (early 21st century), they found objects reminiscent of ancient #reliquaries. An antique QR code will be provided for you to visit this page. You can also beam up in the form of a hologram." 😎 😂 ▶️ cronenburg.net/reliquaires/ #SciArt #ArtActivism #BiodiversityShrines #BiodiversityLoss #archaeology #butterflies

A preciously ornated round cheese box with hand-made perlage and braid in orange and green colour shades. Inside is a green-grey moth, Jordanita subsolana. The wings on one side are hidden under a hand-made gossamer of raw silk, my symbol for vanishing. Once native to Alsace, they are now considered to have disappeared.
A tiny precious element in the same green as the moth is a piece of plastic waste that melted into grey concrete. Glass beads are fixed into a golden crochet "flower".

Finally the penny has dropped! I have an exhibition showcase at a rather conservative #embroidery festival. My #BiodiversityShrines are provocative in a region with farmers who spray pesticides twice when the soil is broken (their logic) and far too many people vote for Le Pen. My idea: I build them up as #archaeological #museum exhibits from the #future! #Subversive. Catch them by #beauty and #colours and when they are hooked ... bang! 😁 #EcoArt #ArtActivism #assemblage #activism #biodiversity

Tiny ants made of rocailles and the finest wire sitting on violet silk for a test.Watering a big piece of bark from a wild cherry (prunus avium). It looks like a papyrus roll. Therefore, I want to fix it like this. On the inside, I want to stitch a fantasy writing with yarn, as if it is a find of an ancient civilisation. Wild cherries are a common tree at forest edges but more and more die because heatwaves and droughts are too much for them.A red vintage cigarette tin box for an assemblage because we "burn biodiversity away". It is wallpapered with a page from a vintage dictionary that begins with the word "human". Other words are checked, forming a story. Inside, a "spider's web" of raw silk is laid out. The cigarette slogan is visible on the lid: When only the best will do. I plan an installation with my small ants but have still to craft some.

Today, I finished a new one of my #BiodiversityShrines feat. Jordanita subsolana, a #butterfly now extinct in our region. My #shrines are a mixture of #paperArt #nature, elements of #culturalHeritage materials and "civilisation" #waste, like the 8 cm wide cheese box and the precious #plastic-cement-waste. My inspirations come from #klosterarbeiten, #reliquaries #naturalHistory #museums and my brain.

View from above into a richly decorated round box in shades of orange, green, gold and yellow. On a padded brocade fabric, the butterfly is pinned next to a decorative element. The inside edges are lined with braids. Around the edge is a handmade ribbon of perlage with floral elements in orange and green, made from the tiniest of limited edition rocailles and finest brass wire.Close-up view of the inner. The butterfly has green forewings and grey hindwings. Its body is made of black leather and green silk. Its right wings are covered by a transparent gossamer hand-made with raw silk and some yellow and green silk threads. The decorative element is made of green plastic fused with cement. A flower is glued in between. It was crocheted from golden DCM yarn, its pistil consists of 5 green picasso beads. The inner rim of the box in close-up shows how the perlage line is constructed and sewn down over the braid. There are three beads in each element: one green bead over two orange ones. The outside of the box is covered with orange-brown sari silk. Above the rim of the box, the perlage elements stand up in the air.

My work today on the #BiodiversityShrines was mainly the old technique of #perlage = #beading. On social media it's often called #FrenchBeading, but in France, we don't say that. Differences in beading technique are less national than temporal. Victorian techniques, f. e., differed from those of the Renaissance. Perlage was traditionally used for costumes, headdresses or so-called #klosterarbeiten like #reliquaries. Here's the start: mastodon.online/@NatureMC/1108 #assemblage #ArtistsOfMastodon #shrine

Floral elements of 3 rocailles (in lustred orange and Picasso turquoise) on the finest brass wire are mounted in line at the top of the edges of a round box. The bottom of the box is padded brocade. A reddish-brown braid is lined inside the rim. when everything is stabilised, I have to arrange these elements carefully.Macro of the paper art butterfly: Jordanita subsolana. The left side with blueish-green and grey wings is photo-realistic, the body is made from black leather and green silk. The right wings are covered with a cobweb-like transparent gossamer. It's handmade with raw silk and inlays of yellow and green silk threads. The same butterfly shown from the other side.A valuable-looking structure. It is green plastic waste melted and fused with a piece of cement. A kind of flower is mounted in a corner between the two materials. It consists of crocheted golden DCM thread and a stamp made of five drop-shaped glass beads.

1/ O holy laziness! I decided not to go to the museum because rainy 14°C is not so much comfortable for sitting outside. I will enjoy the pleasant coolness in my studio before the heat returns. My excuse: So many #BiodiversityShrines for the exhibition in October are not ready yet. (Look on the hashtag for more). So I'm going to skewer #endangered species (don't worry, it's #PaperArt). #NatureArt #assemblages #artistsOfMastodon #EcoArt #activism #BiodiversityLoss #ClimateAction #FolkArt #kinship

Flatlay on my table: a round box with a green-grey paper butterfly and a piece of green plastic melted into concrete, ornated with a crocheted golden flower. In Alsace, the butterfly Jordanita subsolana is on the Red List noted with "RE" = disappeared in the region. Precious fabric and a braid in orange and reddish brown colours are lining the box. Also on the table: two scissors, my glasses, a cup of coffee, needles and orange and turquoise glass rocailles for a colour test.

2/2 Another one of my #cigarette #BiodiversityShrines The article in the box is about Ectopistes migratorius, a wild pigeon extinct in 1914: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passenge A history of colonisation and commercialisation!

Lower part: An abstract structure looking like a bird, mostly emerald green and very glossy on a German article about an extinct bird species: "Von Milliarden blieb keine mehr." A precious green golden braid inside the box edges.
The upper lid: Paper from a book page destroyed by heat showing an animal of the sea in green-blue.A macro shows the origin of the "bird": It is a conglomerate of different materials found on a burning wild rubbish dump. The green was a plastic bottle. Labelled paper and indefinable materials are caked to the side of it. I varnished the green plastic with an extra glossy varnish. So it resembles a semi-precious stone.Approaching the bird-like something: the splendid emerald-like body glistens. The bird-like structure looks like a pigeon that lays its head back to sleep.

1/2 #LostSpecies vanish like a #cigarette. This was my first connotation when I discovered some #vintage cigarette boxes for my #BiodiversityShrines.
