A full-frame, portrait-oriented shot captures a narrow, unpaved walking path stretching into the distance through a verdant natural setting. The path, composed of dark earth or gravel, appears slightly damp and occupies the lower centre of the frame, drawing the eye towards a distant, unidentifiable structure or opening at its vanishing point. Tall, slender trees with lush green foliage line both sides of the path, forming an almost tunnel-like effect. Many of the trees, particularly on the right, appear to be silver birches with their characteristic pale bark. Grey birch (Betula populifolia) looks very similar to its cousin paper birch (Betula papyrifera). The main difference is the lack of peeling bark on grey birch. It also tends to have dark splotches on the bark and darker branches.

Both are short lived pioneer species with lifespans of approx. 60-100 years.

Birches are an important food plant for rodents, ungulates and other mammals that browse the bark and twigs as a winter food source. Squirrels and songbirds feed on the catkins.
