Comic with two trees in the snow. One is a leafless Birch tree and the other a decorated Christmas Pine tree.

The Birch asks the Pine, "Don't you think you're over-dressed?"

The Christmas tree replies, "Birch, please!"

Grey birch (Betula populifolia) looks very similar to its cousin paper birch (Betula papyrifera). The main difference is the lack of peeling bark on grey birch. It also tends to have dark splotches on the bark and darker branches.

Both are short lived pioneer species with lifespans of approx. 60-100 years.

Birches are an important food plant for rodents, ungulates and other mammals that browse the bark and twigs as a winter food source. Squirrels and songbirds feed on the catkins.
