Raptor’s Vigil

Charlie and I took a new route for this morning’s walk. My planned path was blocked, so we pivoted north instead of south. Near the turnaround point, I spotted two red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis), each perched in a different tree to the southeast. Unfortunately, getting closer wasn’t an option—some areas were fenced off, while others were thick with tall brush. Wearing shorts, I wasn’t about to wade through grass and foliage.

A striking black-and-white eagle with a dashing crest feather, striped tail, checkerboard underwings, and striped underparts is considering what twig to adjust next in her large elaborate nest. This is a female Crested Eagle, one of a pair we observed after riding a boat and some horses into the forest of the Darien national park. The male was also around and was actually encountered first hunting away from the nest. A rule of thumb I heard: There are approximately one pair of Crested Eagles for every ten pairs of Harpy Eagles known in the world. Both are large, powerful forest eagles. Photo by Peachfront. Bald eagles hunt snow geese by causing them to panic colliding with each other; so they break each others limbs, effectively rendering them flightless and thus much easier targets.
