Midsummer in the south of Finland, meaning sunset at 11 pm. Even #owls have to cope with it. Tawny owl hearing his nemesis, the Goshawk. 🪶🦉🇫🇮 #BirdsSeenIn2025 #naturephotography #birdsofmastodon

Today’s #WeekendWaterbird is a #GreatWhiteEgret on an urban pond, spotted on my morning walk. In England. Who would’ve imagined it?!

#ArdeaAlba #LowCarbonBirding #UrbanBirding #BirdsSeenIn2025 #Birding

A great white egret, which is a big heron type bird that is (you guessed it!) white, wading up to its chest on a green pond surrounded by reeds and bushes. There are houses in the background behind the bushes.

Barn owl again on my morning walk, in the same place, today… and this time I had my pocket bins on me :-)

Flap-flying about a lot, rather than gently gliding as I’ve normally seen before, though definitely still hunting.

Ideas for possible reasons -
warm still day makes gliding harder/impractical?
young/inexperienced bird?
lots of car noise interferes with the listening done when gliding, while flapping lets it cover more ground while predominantly eyeballing for prey?
flapping is more fun?

I may have skipped #TwoDuckTuesday yesterday, but I do have a pair of #TuftedDucks for today’s #WednesdayWaterbirds

#DuckOfTheDay #LowCarbonBirding #BirdsSeenIn2025 #AthythaFuligula

Two tufted ducks swimming alongside each other, the female slightly ahead but further from the camera. They look sleek and healthy. The male is ink black with a white side and an elegant swept back tuft, the female browner and more subtle.

I turn my back for five minutes, and does anyone else post a #MondayMallard? They do not. For shame.
