#lostbones #FossilFriday πŸ‚πŸ¦₯🐴πŸͺπŸŸπŸƒ In late summer 1988, a Granite Falls, MN couple excavating a refuse pit found a ~8000 year-old bison bone bed on their land. Finding a projectile point in the material led to three seasons of fieldwork, uncovering additional points, flakes, and tools, including a stone biface found in situ with the bison remains.

Some of these bones are now displayed at the Yellow Medicine County Historical Society.

#LostBones #FossilFriday πŸ‚ Five bison species are said to have roamed North America: The Eurasian Bison priscus adapted into Bison latifrons, which downsized into Bison antiquus. Later, Bison occidentalis emerged in the Late Pleistocene, leading to today’s Bison bison. Are they all distinct, or was it a gradual shift?

🦌#Minnesota #FossilFriday πŸ‚πŸ¦₯🐴🐘πŸͺπŸŸπŸƒRemnants of deer and bison are common along many Minnesota rivers. Teeth, metacarpals, metatarsals, and some long bones withstand the erosive forces of rivers particularly well.

These specimens were all found during a single kayak trip this field season, along just a two-mile stretch of river in southern Minnesota.

It's #LostBones #FossilFriday!πŸ‚πŸ¦₯🐴🐘πŸͺπŸŸπŸƒ Bison hyoid bones are quite rare in the collections I have reviewed. This pair is part of a larger assemblage donated in 2022, including elements from both juvenile and adults.

The bones were all recovered in Wolcott Township by an independent researcher and are currently housed at the Rice County Historical Society in Faribault Minnesota.

A remarkable find: Two neighbors contributed a total of 100 bison bones, discovered in separate years from the same lowland peat deposit spanning a highway in Walcott County, Minnesota. Notably, one of the collections shows possible signs of butchery.

Both collections are now at the Rice County Historical Society in Faribault, Minnesota.

#lostbones #FossilFriday #bisonbison #saskatchewan Picked up what I thought was a rock yesterday, in a new field turned up when breaking sod.
I am certain that it's the top of a bison skull from what must have been a huge animal. The drum that it is sitting on in the picture is 2ft diameter and the skull fragment is nearly that wide without the horns.
Can anyone help identify the species or aprx. age of this skull?

πŸ‚#LostBones #FossilFriday πŸ¦₯🐴🐘πŸͺπŸŸπŸƒ In 1975, near Lake Koronis in central MN, a farmer uncovered a spring filled with bison bones while constructing a drainage ditch.

He contacted universities but found no interest. So, he and his family assembled a complete skeleton, which was displayed in a friend's leather shop for years before being acquired by the Paynesville Historical Society, where it resides today.

πŸ‚#LostBones #FossilFridayπŸ¦₯🐴🐘πŸͺπŸŸπŸƒ In 1983 while constructing a reservoir in Sherburne County Minnesota a farmer came across hundreds of jumbled bison bones.

in 1984, due to the nature of the site and the distribution of the bones, Dr. Stanley Lewis of St. Cloud State University concluded that the bison had possibly been washed in during a flood event.

More #Minnesota #lostbones for #FossilFriday! πŸ‚πŸ¦₯🐴🐘πŸͺ🐟 I ran across this large bison skull cap at the Houston Nature Center in Houston, MN.

Found in a local creek in 1958 it measures almost 30 inches across the horn cores.

The nature center also has other #Pleistocene specimens on display as well. The city of Houston sits near the center of the Midwest’s glacial β€œDriftless” Area.
