Some still closed and some blooming bladder campion (Silene vulgaris; Taubenkropf-Leimkraut) showing its delicate white petals. In the blurred background, the rough, furrowed bark of an elder tree a small natural stone wall and some green grass.

Close-up of a blooming bladder campion (English: Bladder Campion – Silene vulgaris – German: Taubenkropf-Leimkraut) showing its delicate white petals emerging from an inflated, veined calyx shaped like a small balloon. The fine details of the flower’s papery, bladder-like structure are in sharp focus. In the softly blurred background a stone wall and a rough, furrowed bark of an elder tree (Sambucus nigra; Schwarzer Holunder) provide a contrasting texture, grounding the scene in a natural setting.

Part of my morning ritual is to fix incorrect IDs on iNaturalist for the one species on the planet I'm really, really familiar with, Silene latifolia (my PhD focus). It gives me a quick buzz of competence that lasts several minutes, plus reminds me of good times in graduate school. #silene #dioecy #botany #classification #plants #flowers #inaturalist #caryophyllaceae #WhiteCampion #BladderCampion #BrownUniversity

Screenshot of a webpage that displays a tiny photograph of a white-flowered plant labeled "bladder campion" above an even smaller photograph of a plant labeled "white campion." To left is a small photograph of me looking like a dork.

#Silene vulgaris or #Bladder #Campion. Eye-catching #weed flowers I found at Commissioners Track, #Roxburgh, Central Otago. First 3 photos taken 04 Dec, last pic taken 27 Dec. New Zealand #NewZealand #SileneVulgaris #BladderCampion #CentralOtago

Fairly close view of small white many-petalled starry flowers, each of which has a sac behind it that looks inflated like a balloon. The sac is oval in shape and the sac colour is a soft rosy pink-mauve. One sac is broken and there's a green seed or seed-case visible inside. Some sacs are open at the top and appear as if their flowers have already died away. This photo shows more context than the last one. We see there are many of the bladder blooms, and they're scattered unevenly through long green grass.Full-frame photo showing a haze of the pink-and-white bladder blooms scattered randomly through the long grass and thereby offering a delightful mess of pink, white and green. This is the only photo taken yesterday 27 December. Close-up photo of the bladder flowers. Some have sacs with flowers or dying flowers, some are sacs with no flowers - either because the flower still hasn't emerged or in other instances the flower has died and a green seed or seed-case is visible nestled in the bladder.
