Montage I took on Sept 9th of the lunar eclipse while we were in Frankfurt, Germany. The exposure changes partway through because that's when I remembered I had a neutral density filter! 😂

The shooting settings and subsequent exposure correction are shown in each image for a better overview.
Although the Nikon D7200 has an ISO-invariant sensor, it does not have a second low-light capacitor, so I initially underexposed quite a bit – also in the hope of not causing any motion blur.

Die Aufnahme-Einstellungen sowie die nachträgliche Belichtungskorrektur stehen jeweils in den Bildern, um eine bessere Übersicht zu haben.
Die Nikon D7200 verfügt zwar über einen ISO-invarianten Sensor, jedoch über keinen zweiten Low-Light-Kondensator, sodass ich anfangs ziemlich unterbelichtet habe - auch in der Hoffnung, noch keine Bewegungsunschärfe zu provozieren.

🌕✨ Witnessing the magic of the universe!
I had the incredible opportunity to capture the September 2025 lunar eclipse right here in Kigali, Rwanda. The moon, glowing in shades of red and shadow, was absolutely breathtaking.

Shot with my Nikon D7200 paired with a Tamron 150-600mm lens, this moment reminds me just how small we are compared to the wonders above us. 🌌

🌕🌑 Blood Moon – Sept 7, 2025 🌑🌕

I had never seen a blood moon or a lunar eclipse before so I decided to change that on this day. With low expectations I grabbed my gear and walked to a nearby field around 7:30 PM hoping to finally witness and capture it with my camera.

After finding a good spot, I set everything up and started waiting… and waiting. Behind me the sun was setting beautifully but in the east where the moon was supposed to rise a thick blanket of clouds covered the sky. My hopes slowly faded while I got eaten alive by mosquitoes and the air grew colder by the minute.

At some point I took a phone photo of the cloudy sky just to document the situation and that’s when I suddenly saw it. The moon. Half hidden in the clouds. Blood red. I immediately turned my camera towards it but I only had about 5 minutes before the eclipse started to fade and the sunlight hit the moon again turning it gray.

Because the moon was still barely visible and my focus was off at first, I only managed to capture one photo of the blood moon. I had planned to wait for the full moon later on but the cold got to me. Fog started rolling in, I was soaked and my gear was soaked so I „gave up“. But honestly, I walked home frozen but happy.

The next day, I edited the photos and I’m pretty satisfied with how it turned out. It was such a magical experience to see it with my own eyes and through the lens. Definitely worth it🌕💜

Another first for me: never properly photographed eclipses, or Moon in general. This year I finally own a good tripod, so I could use it with my old trusty Sigma 100-300mm lens, and a newer and not loved (horribly small battery, and it's draining if you leave it in the camera) Canon r10 mirrorless. It seems to be a good camera otherwise. Still, it gives me 480mm equivalent, and I have an East-South facing open balcony :)
