Shed the Skin – The Carnage Cast Shadows Review

By Mark Z.

I don’t know how some people can keep creating art for so long. Somehow fucking Clint Eastwood is still making movies, and that guy looked ancient when Gran Torino came out in 2008. Shed the Skin aren’t as old as Clint, but they’ve got a wealth of experience nonetheless. Formed in 2011 as a tribute to the long-defunct Ohio death metal group Blood of Christ, this sort-of-supergroup are comprised of several extreme metal veterans, including vocalist/guitarist Ash Thomas (Faithxtractor, Crucified Mortals), drummer Kyle Severn (Incantation), bassist Ed Stephens (Ringworm), and guitarist Matt Sorg (Ringworm, ex-Blood of Christ). On their previous four albums, the group offered up fun, no-nonsense death metal characterized by a sense of frenetic melody. While 2018’s We of Scorn was their high point to me, they’ve never released anything bad, though I agree with Akerblogger that 2020’s The Forbidden Arts was a bit too bloated. With The Carnage Cast Shadows, the group are back again, here to ostensibly show us that these olde dogs still got it.

And honestly, they kind of do. The Carnage Cast Shadows shows Shed the Skin still doing what they do best, all while sounding as inspired as a spritely young act just releasing their debut. As before, these songs largely barrel forward with a sense of belligerent glee, often carried by dexterous, melodic guitar lines that recall later Carcass. The opening title track highlights this energy right from the start, kicking open the gates with fast, pummeling drums and a quick, wriggly riff that’s sure to burrow its way into your brain. The next track, “Crook of the Sacred Skies,” keeps up the momentum with similarly swift tempos while avoiding redundancy via the harsher chords of its main riff. Through it all, Ash sounds as wild as ever, with his manic, garbled growls occasionally overlaid with higher, raspier vocals in a way that recalls Deicide.

Given Shed the Skin’s pedigree, it’s unsurprising that they know how to make an album work well, but The Carnage Cast Shadows is particularly successful due to its variety and tight track lengths. Songs like “Ice Hearted Herald” and “Henge Tomb” mix things up by slowing the tempo early, but it’s in the record’s back half where things get especially good. The opening moments of crossover thrash in “Formorian Hordes” initially make it seem like it’s going to be a repurposed Ringworm song before the track takes an awesome turn by incorporating jumpy couplets and a swirling, melodic solo that recalls modern Kreator. “Scion of Nyx” slings chunky chords at the listener and uses a dramatic pause to great effect, while the closing track, “Stolen from the Storm God,” uses a more measured main melody to end the album in fine form.

In all, there’s little to complain about. While songs like “Swarm and Talons” and “The Mind’s Vermin” don’t stand out as much as their brethren, there really isn’t a bad cut here, and the fact that many of these eleven songs are less than four minutes long means that nothing overstays its welcome. The biggest issue is the string of mid-tempo songs in the record’s first half, which subdues the energy a bit too much after the pit bull viciousness of the first two tracks. Fortunately, the production is great, with punchy drums, a beefy guitar tone, and a forceful overall sound. As always, the performances are also sizzling with inspiration, with each member sounding like they’re giving it their all and having an absolute blast while doing so. Matt and Ash deliver an endless onslaught of lively riffs and solos, Kyle delivers an aggressive drum performance, and seemingly every moment is crammed with Ash’s crazed vocals.

No one’s going to say this album is reinventing death metal, but that’s not the point of Shed the Skin. This project is about dudes who are good at death metal playing good death metal. On The Carnage Cast Shadows, they’ve succeeded by offering inspired performances, varied songs, and tight runtimes. Those who have been following Shed the Skin are sure to enjoy this as much as anything they’ve done, and in the book of Mark Z, it’s one of their best releases yet. Take the plunge and bang that fukkin head!

Explore the profound meaning of Jesus's words at the Last Supper. We delve into the significance of 'This is my body,' emphasizing its importance in remembrance and faith. Join our discussion on the body and blood of Christ and its impact on our beliefs.

Quote of the day, 20 April: Père Jacques

Père Jacques de Jésus experienced and witnessed the power of the Resurrection in the concentration camps. One of his companions, Roger Heim, writes in his testimony:

“The last vision of Gusen, of this court of appeal where so many men had perished, is for me inseparable from the memory of the man, the priest who, once again, dominated all the disasters in this multitude and who, in the end, gave us victory, that of Man over the system born of matter and base instincts. The great victor was the one who had passed through these trials as the salamander is said to pass through fire. On 28 April 1945, Père Jacques was resplendent in his victory.”

In March 1945, Père Jacques, in a small note, distilled the message of faith and hope he wanted to leave his companions:

Per Crucem ad lucem !… Through the Cross toward the Light!…

Sine sanguinis non fit redemptio!… Without the blood, there is no redemption!…

Qui facit veritatem venit ad lucem. He who does the truth comes to the light.

In this way, he left his friends a sign of friendship and hope in a place where death lurked around the corner. These words spring from his priestly heart, filled with the Word of God. They represent the maturing of a whole life. Per Crucem ad lucem! Through the cross toward the light.”

The first sentence evokes the Paschal Mystery, the Mystery of Death and Resurrection, with Life getting the last word. With these four words, he proclaims the faith of the Church. The Cross is not a goal but the path that leads to the light of the Resurrection.

Death and Resurrection are the two inseparable faces of a single reality: that of the Paschal Mystery of Christ Jesus. For a Christian, the Cross is always illuminated by the light of Easter, but this light is only fully discovered by passing through the Cross, the only path to Life.

These are just four words but what power of hope they delivered in this place of unspeakable horror and programmed death. What a proclamation of faith in the victory of Christ!

2024 Carmelite Online Lenten Retreat: Easter

Note: On 28 April 1945, just days before the liberation of Mauthausen, Père Jacques de Jésus, OCD (Lucien Bunel), was seen by fellow deportees in what one eyewitness later described as “resplendent in victory.” Gravely ill with pneumonia and extreme malnutrition, he remained behind in the Sanitätslager, the section of the camp where the sick and dying were left in horrific conditions. Whether by choice or because he was too ill to be moved, Père Jacques stayed—a quiet and luminous presence of faith, hope, and love amid despair. Survivors recognized in him the triumph of the Paschal Mystery: the victory of Christ’s light through the Cross, shining in the life of a priest who had given himself entirely to others.

[Mother Agnès writes:] We had brought her a bouquet of dahlias from outside; she gazed at them with pleasure, running her fingers ever so gently through the petals! After Father Denis’ First Mass, she asked to see his chalice, and because she was looking for a long time at the bottom of the cup, someone asked:

“Why are you looking so intently at the bottom of the chalice?”

Because my reflection is there; when I was Sacristan, I used to love doing this. I was happy to say to myself: My features are reflected in the place where the Blood of Jesus rested and where it will descend again. How many times, too, have I thought that at Rome, my face was reproduced in the eyes of the Holy Father.

Saint Thérèse of Lisieux

Note: Canon Joseph-Pierre-Eugène-Marie Denis de Maroy was born on 20 March 1871 in Paris. He was a friend of the Guérin and La Néele families. During his seminary years, he visited with all four of the Martin daughters—Marie, Pauline, Céline, and Thérèse—in the monastery parlor. A Lisieux native, he wanted to be ordained in Lisieux, but his ordination took place in the diocesan see of Bayeux on 18 September 1897; his first Mass was at the Carmel of Lisieux on Sunday, 19 September 1897. In 1958, Father Denis said that for his first Mass at the monastery, Thérèse had roses given to him to adorn his chalice, after she had kissed them. He died in Lisieux on 29 December 1962.

“Hail, Cross, our only hope!”—this is what the holy church summoned us to exclaim during the time for contemplating the bitter suffering of our Lord Jesus Christ. The jubilant exclamation of the Easter Alleluia silenced the serious song of the cross. But the sign of our salvation greeted us amid the time of Easter joy, since we were recalling the discovery of the One who had passed from sight.

At the end of the cycle of ecclesiastical feasts, the cross greets us through the heart of the Savior. And now, as the church year draws toward an end, it is raised high before us and is to hold us spellbound until the Easter Alleluia summons us anew to forget the earth for a while and rejoice in the marriage of the Lamb.

Our holy Order has us begin our fast with the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. And it leads us to the foot of the cross to renew our holy vows. The Crucified One looks down on us and asks us whether we are still willing to honor what we promised in an hour of grace. And he certainly has reason to ask.

More than ever the cross is a sign of contradiction. The followers of the Antichrist show it far more dishonor than did the Persians who stole it. They desecrate the images of the cross, and they make every effort to tear the cross out of the hearts of Christians. All too often they have succeeded even with those who, like us, once vowed to bear Christ’s cross after him.

Therefore, the Savior today looks at us, solemnly probing us, and asks each one of us: Will you remain faithful to the Crucified? Consider carefully! The world is in flames, the battle between Christ and the Antichrist has broken into the open.

If you decide for Christ, it could cost you your life. Carefully consider what you promise.

Taking and renewing vows is a dreadfully serious business. You make a promise to the Lord of heaven and earth. If you are not deadly serious about your will to fulfill it, you fall into the hands of the living God…

Ave Crux, Spes unica!

The world is in flames. The conflagration can also reach our house. But high above all flames towers the cross. They cannot consume it. It is the path from earth to heaven. It will lift one who embraces it in faith, love, and hope into the bosom of the Trinity.

The world is in flames. Are you impelled to put them out? Look at the cross. From the open heart gushes the blood of the Savior. This extinguishes the flames of hell.

We present excerpts from the meditation for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, a fervorino that Saint Teresa Benedicta wrote for the prioress to deliver to the nuns of the Carmel of Echt, Holland on 14 September 1939, her first opportunity to renew her vows as a Discalced Carmelite in her new community.

Edith mentions that “our holy Order has us begin our fast with the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.” Here she makes a direct reference to the Carmelite Rule of St. Albert of Jerusalem, No. 16:

You are to fast every day, except Sundays, from the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross until Easter Day, unless bodily sickness or feebleness, or some other good reason, demand a dispensation from the fast; for necessity overrides every law.

For centuries, Discalced Carmelite nuns have renewed their vows of obedience, poverty, and chastity—the order in which Edith presented the vows in her meditation—on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

Although the Discalced Carmelite friars renew their vows and the Discalced Carmelite Secular Order members renew their Promise at Easter or during the Octave of Easter, the 1991 Constitutions of the Discalced Carmelite nuns indicate that they shall renew their profession twice each year:

In order to give common witness to religious consecration in following Christ, every year the sisters will renew their religious profession during the Easter Vigil or the octave of Easter, and on the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, using the formula given in the Ritual. The communities may repeat this renewal on other occasions in order to strengthen their commitment to this way of life.

No matter what legislation Discalced Carmelites may observe, the essential purpose is clear: “to strengthen their commitment to this way of life.”

At the feet of Mary, my beloved mother, I found life again!

I can’t go on! I can no longer live in this exile, I’m burning up!
At the feet of Mary, I have found life again!

O all you who suffer, come to Mary!
At the feet of Mary, I find life again!

Your salvation and your life are at Mary’s feet! O you who work in this monastery, Mary counts your steps and your sweat; say to yourself…
At the feet of Mary, I found life again!

You who live in this monastery, free yourselves from everything earthly. Your salvation and your life are at Mary’s feet! You who live in this monastery, Mary says to you: My child, I have chosen you among ten thousand, among ten thousand I will place you in my temple.
At the feet of Mary, you find life!

Mary says to you: I have put you in my temple, you will never hunger, you will never thirst; I give you the food, the flesh, the blood of the Innocent One.
At the feet of Mary, I found life!

You who say I am an orphan, see, I have a mother in the highest heavens, happy child of such a mother!
At the feet of Mary, I find life!

I dwell in my mother’s womb, where I find my Beloved! Am I an orphan?
In the womb of Mary, I find life!

Don’t say I’m an orphan; I have Mary for Mother and God for Father! Happy child! Say:
At the feet of Mary, I found life!

The serpent, the dragon wanted to bite me and take my life; but at my mother’s feet, in this monastery, I found life! Mary calls me…
And in this monastery, I’ll stay forever!
At the feet of Mary, I found life again!

Featured image: Patrocinio de la Virgen del Carmen (Patronage of Our Lady of Mount Carmel) is an oil on canvas painting by an anonymous 17th-century Novohispanic artist. This massive work is just over 7 feet in height and just over 6 feet in width (height: 218 cm, width: 195 cm). The gallery label from the Museo de El Carmen notes: “This is a magnificent oil on panel painting from the 17th century, whose soft colors and certain features in the drawing remind us of Luis Juárez (ca. 1585–1639), although it also shows echoes of Baltasar Echave Ibía (ca. 1605–1644), such as the general bluish tone of the painting. This leads us to assume that a skilled painter was the author of this work and was either a follower or a close follower of the previous painters. Following the traditional representation of the Patrocinio, so deeply rooted in colonial art, the composition of the canvas is almost symmetrical. In the upper corners, Saint Joseph and the young Jesus hold the mantle that the Virgin unfolds to protect the main characters of the Order. At the front of the male group we see Elijah wielding the flaming sword; behind him is St. Angelus of Jerusalem with a sword thrust into his chest and a palm, symbol of martyrdom and sanctity. On the opposite side, a group of nuns is probably led by St. Teresa.” Image credit: INAH-Museo de El Carmen / Michel Zabé y Omar Olguín (Public domain)

When having found faith through the study of the Bible we do need to do works of faith

When we have found the Word of God and started reading the Bible with an open mind, letting the words come to us like they are written, it shall transform our inner self, if we allow it to do that.

When we do come into the faith, believing in One God and believing in His only begotten son, to be the sent one from God and the Messiah, our saviour, we shall have to take actions. We shall not be able to continue to live like we did before.

Faith demands action. Faith demands works.

We do know that there are lots of pastors who say contrary, but be aware that rabbi Jeshua taught his followers to be prudent and to be alert, doing the right things are otherwise they could miss the opportunity to enter God’s Kingdom.

It is true that we have received the free Gift of the Grace of God by the Blood of Christ. But it is not because we are giving a whitewashing of sins by the ransom offer of Christ Jesus, that we can do whatever we want. No. Once we come into the faith we shall have to do the works of faith. In case we do not do those works of the Law our faith shall be like a dead faith, not bringing us far.

When from our bible reading we got to see that Jesus is the Way and that we have to become one like he is one with God we shall have to work on ourselves to become like Jesus. It shall take many works to come in Christ and becoming “a new creation“. Than the old person has to be set aside and a new person has to take you over, like you are reborn in this system of things, you not any more being of the world but being of God.

Thanks to the sent one from God and God accepting Jesus his offering as a payment for sins, salvation has come over us. But when becoming a Christian we are at a new starting point, saved from the curse of death. This we have to keep so, which shall demand lots of works, keeping ourselves under control.

God reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation. Given a free way now we have to keep our good relationship with This Divine Creator and with His son. That God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them does not give us now a free way to continue sinning.  God has committed to us the message of reconciliation.  Therefore we have to be Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making His appeal through us.  Jesus asked his disciples to go out into the world and to proclaim the Gospel message of the coming Kingdom of God. This is a very important work we do have to do. This we only can do properly when we live according to what we preach.

We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God and start doing the works of faith.

Let us have a look at what the Bible itself says about Faith and Works.

“17 Wherefore if any man is in Christ, {1} [he is] a new creature: the old things are passed away; behold, they are become new. {1) Or, there is [a new creation]} 18 But all things are of God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and gave unto us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 to wit, that God was in Christ reconciling the world unto himself, not reckoning unto them their trespasses, and having {1} committed unto us the word of reconciliation. {1) Or [placed in us]}

20 We are ambassadors therefore on behalf of Christ, as though God were entreating by us: we beseech [you] on behalf of Christ, be ye reconciled to God.” (2 Corinthians 5:17-20 ASV)

“3 For this is the will of God, [even] your sanctification, that ye abstain from fornication; 4 that each one of you know how to possess himself of his own vessel in sanctification and honor, 5 not in the passion of lust, even as the Gentiles who know not God; 6 that no man transgress, and wrong his brother in the matter: because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as also we forewarned you and testified.

7 For God called us not for uncleanness, but in sanctification. 8 Therefore he that rejecteth, rejecteth not man, but God, who giveth his Holy Spirit unto you.

9  But concerning love of the brethren ye have no need that one write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another; 10 for indeed ye do it toward all the brethren that are in all Macedonia. But we exhort you, brethren, that ye abound more and more; 11 and that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your hands, even as we charged you; 12 that ye may walk becomingly toward them that are without, and may have need of nothing.” (1 Thessalonians 4:3-12 ASV)

“2  Count it all joy, my brethren, when ye fall into manifold temptations; 3 Knowing that the proving of your faith worketh patience. 4 And let patience have [its] perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, lacking in nothing.

5 But if any of you lacketh wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all liberally and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, nothing doubting: for he that doubteth is like the surge of the sea driven by the wind and tossed.

7 For let not that man think that he shall receive anything of the Lord; 8 a doubleminded man, unstable in all his ways. 9 But let the brother of low degree glory in his high estate: 10 and the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.” (James 1:2-10 ASV)

“12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation; for when he hath been approved, he shall receive the crown of life, which [the Lord] promised to them that love him.

13  Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God; for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempteth no man: 14 but each man is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed.
15 Then the lust, when it hath conceived, beareth sin: and the sin, when it is fullgrown, bringeth forth death.” (James 1:12-15 ASV)

“19  Ye know [this], my beloved brethren. But let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: 20 for the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. 21 Wherefore putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deluding your own selves. 23 For if any one is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a mirror: 24 for he beholdeth himself, and goeth away, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. 25 But he that looketh into the perfect law, the [law] of liberty, and [so] continueth, being not a hearer that forgetteth but a doer that worketh, this man shall be blessed in his doing. 26 If any man thinketh himself to be religious, while he bridleth not his tongue but deceiveth his heart, this man’s religion is vain. 27 Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, [and] to keep oneself unspotted from the world.” (James 1:19-27 ASV)

“1  My brethren, hold not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, [the Lord] of glory, with respect of persons. 2 For if there come into your synagogue a man with a gold ring, in fine clothing, and there come in also a poor man in vile clothing; 3 and ye have regard to him that weareth the fine clothing, and say, Sit thou here in a good place; and ye say to the poor man, Stand thou there, or sit under my footstool; 4 do ye not make distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?” (James 2:1-4 ASV)

“8  Howbeit if ye fulfil the royal law, according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well: 9 but if ye have respect of persons, ye commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one [point], he is become guilty of all.

11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou dost not commit adultery, but killest, thou art become a transgressor of the law.

12 So speak ye, and so do, as men that are to be judged by a law of liberty. 13 For judgment [is] without mercy to him that hath showed no mercy: mercy glorieth against judgment.

14  What doth it profit, my brethren, if a man say he hath faith, but have not works? can that faith save him?

15 If a brother or sister be naked and in lack of daily food, 16 and one of you say unto them, Go in peace, be ye warmed and filled; and yet ye give them not the things needful to the body; what doth it profit?

17 Even so faith, if it have not works, is dead in itself.

18 Yea, a man will say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith apart from [thy] works, and I by my works will show thee [my] faith.

19 Thou believest that God is one; thou doest well: the demons also believe, and shudder. 20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith apart from works is barren?

21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, in that he offered up Isaac his son upon the altar? 22 Thou seest that faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect; 23 and the scripture was fulfilled which saith, And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned unto him for righteousness; and he was called the friend of God.

24 Ye see that by works a man is justified, and not only by faith.

25 And in like manner was not also Rahab the harlot justified by works, in that she received the messengers, and sent them out another way? 26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead.” (James 2:8-26 ASV)

“13  Who is wise and understanding among you? let him show by his good life his works in meekness of wisdom. 14 But if ye have bitter jealousy and faction in your heart, glory not and lie not against the truth. 15 This wisdom is not [a wisdom] that cometh down from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. 16 For where jealousy and faction are, there is confusion and every vile deed. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without variance, without hypocrisy. 18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for them that make peace.” (James 3:13-18 ASV)

“1  Whence [come] wars and whence [come] fightings among you? [come they] not hence, [even] of your pleasures that war in your members?

2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and covet, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war; ye have not, because ye ask not. 3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may spend [it] in your pleasures.

4 Ye adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore would be a friend of the world maketh himself an enemy of God.

5 Or think ye that the scripture speaketh in vain? Doth the spirit which he made to dwell in us long unto envying? 6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore [the scripture] saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble.

7 Be subject therefore unto God; but resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye doubleminded.

9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.

10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall exalt you.

11  Speak not one against another, brethren. He that speaketh against a brother, or judgeth his brother, speaketh against the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judgest the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. 12 One [only] is the lawgiver and judge, [even] he who is able to save and to destroy: but who art thou that judgest thy neighbor?” (James 4:1-12 ASV)

“7 Be patient therefore, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient over it, until it receive the early and latter rain. 8 Be ye also patient; establish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord is at hand. 9 Murmur not, brethren, one against another, that ye be not judged: behold, the judge standeth before the doors. 10 Take, brethren, for an example of suffering and of patience, the prophets who spake in the name of the Lord.” (James 5:7-10 ASV)

“12  But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by the heaven, nor by the earth, nor by any other oath: but let your yea be yea, and your nay, nay; that ye fall not under judgment.

13 Is any among you suffering? Let him pray. Is any cheerful? Let him sing praise.

14 Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: 15 and the prayer of faith shall save him that is sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, it shall be forgiven him. 16 Confess therefore your sins one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The supplication of a righteous man availeth much in its working.” (James 5:12-16 ASV)

“19 My brethren, if any among you err from the truth, and one convert him; 20 let him know, that he who converteth a sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall cover a multitude of sins.” (James 5:19-20 ASV)
