Biodiversity under the wheels near Repton

"ANGELA Wallace is one of many people upset about the number of koalas being killed on local roads....Little has been done to mitigate these deaths, with another koala recently killed near Repton. “No wonder our iconic koala (dunggirr) is endangered with our roads as ‘killing zones’, deforestation [causing a] loss of habitat, and them trying to survive extreme weather events such as fires and floods.”

"She pointed out that where the koala died, the wildlife fence nearby was thickly overgrown with lantana and a nearby underpass was almost impenetrable due to a mass of lantana."

If an injured, sick or orphaned native animal is found, WIRES can be contacted on 1300 094 737.

The NSW Department of Planning and Environment gets out the cavalry and finds that koalas really exist.

"NSW Premier Chris Minns, Minister for the Environment Penny Sharpe and Minister for Agriculture and Regional NSW Tara Moriarty have today visited Bongil Bongil National Park near Coffs Harbour to see firsthand the areas that will form the park and meet scientists who are using drones to improve the accuracy of the NSW koala count."

Forestry Corp has started logging compartment 14 of the Pine Creek State Forest within the boundaries of the Great Koala National Park (GKNP).

"The compartment is bordered on three sides by Bongil Bongil National Park. It contains a ‘koala hub’ – the only interim government policy protection afforded koala in the GKNP."

"Fully 50-60% of every tree felled is ‘waste’ for Forestry’s purposes. Non target species such as casuarina (the primary food source of endangered glossy black cockatoo) is swept away as trash. All this is bulldozed into 3-meter high long windrows and burned. What are the CO2 losses from this practice one wonders."
