#BooksofMastodon Could there be a genre of fiction similar to #SciFi except about #economics, i.e., speculative, alternative economic models? Alternative history stories similar to #OSC Pastwatch?

My latest read: "Beneath the Smog" by Brian Bowyer

Looking for an absolutely bonkers combination of transgressive fiction and extreme horror? Look no further.

Al abrir la librería, Bandini nos ha preguntado por la primavera. Le he dicho que sí, que falta poco, para consolarlo. Mientras tanto, seguiremos abriendo, (que dirían los Leño --Rosendo, cuídate, maestro--).

There were other books I loved but this was the short list.

• Withcraft for Wayward Girls
• The Guest List
• Death on the Nile
• Beautyland
• Les Misérables

Les Misérables.
Victor Hugo

I read this starting in August. Finished it yesterday. I have so much to say but will keep it short. I’ve wept multiple times. Every character makes a difference. The attention to detail. I have to think more since it’s been only a day since I’ve finished, but by god I loved it.

The Guest List.
Lucy Foley

A “girly pop” suspense. Building up to the end and the tie-it-all-together. I loved it. Characters felt fresh to me. Not predictable (other than the obvious genre stuff).

Death on the Nile.
Agatha Christie

Being exposed to Poirot through PBS rather than the novels, it is easy to see why this is a beloved series, with this entry considered the best. Much intrigue and misdirection.

Beautyland.
Marie-Helene Bertino

She’s an alien living undercover as a human. Metaphor for being a lone and struggling to fit in. Beautiful prose.

Witchcraft for Wayward Girls.
Grady Hendrix

Horror themed coming of age story based around the ‘baby snatch’ era. How the powerless took back power. Reflective of the past and today. Fun and great read.

FYI: If you've been looking for an excuse to read Gareth L. Powell's "Embers of War" series, the first book is the current selection in my little speculative-fiction book club over at The Book Radar. Check it out!

I finished reading 16 books in 2025. A lot of Pratchett, all of Dune, gifts from 2024 and a re-read of Riders for Dame Jilly.

Trying to finish "Dracula" tonight, so that I can at least claim to have read 7 books in 2025. The number is still underwhelming.
