loc.gov/pictures/item/20026967

The image depicts a historical scene showcasing Furness Abbey, an abbey located in England. The general view captures the ruins of this former monastery set against lush greenery and rolling hills under a cloudy sky. In the foreground, there is well-manicured grass with several sheep grazing leisurely near small patches of trees. A path or road winds through the landscape leading towards the main structure of the abbey.

The architecture of Furness Abbey features Gothic elements, such as pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and flying buttresses, evident in its partially standing walls and large windows with tracery. The overall atmosphere conveyed by the image is one of historical grandeur juxtaposed against a serene natural setting, evoking a sense of tranquility and the passage of time since this abbey's peak during medieval times.

The vintage aesthetic suggests that the photo may have been taken around ca. 1890 to ca. 1900 when postcards like these were popular for capturing scenic locations or historical sites. loc.gov/pictures/item/20026967

The image depicts a natural rock formation, prominently featured in the foreground with its jagged edges and layered surfaces that suggest geological significance. The rocks appear weathered, indicative of long-term exposure to elements such as wind or rain. This landscape is lush with greenery; ferns, shrubs, and small plants are scattered across the terrain near the base of the rock formation.

The background displays a serene sky with soft hues, possibly suggesting early morning or late afternoon light conditions that cast gentle shadows on the rocks' surface, enhancing their texture and three-dimensionality. The overall ambiance evokes tranquility amidst nature's raw beauty.

In terms of context within English culture, such images are often associated with historical exploration and appreciation for natural heritage sites in Britain during a period where photography was becoming prevalent but still distinct enough to capture the essence of untouched landscapes like this one from England’s Forest of Dean. The harbor, Folkestone, England between ca. 1890 and ca. 1900. Views of the British Isles England Folkestone

#Folkestone #England #HARBOUR #British #Loener #Europe #photography #historicalPhotos #photochrom

loc.gov/pictures/item/20026967

The image depicts a coastal harbor scene, likely from an early 20th-century postcard or historical photograph. The setting is Folkestone's port area with various vessels docked at piers and in the open water, including sailboats and what appears to be commercial cargo ships. The architecture of the surrounding buildings suggests late Victorian-era design, characterized by red brick facades and large windows typical for industrial or maritime use.

The photograph has a sepia tone common to images from that period, providing an aged look with brownish hues dominating the scene. A notable feature is the presence of two figures walking along the harbor's edge in the foreground, giving a sense of scale to the busy port environment. The sky above is clear with no visible clouds, and the sea appears calm.

The caption "10326 - FOLKESTONE THE HARBOUR" indicates that this image has been cataloged or labeled for historical reference, possibly as part of an archive dedicated to British Isles' views during its late Victorian era. This context suggests a focus on documenting maritime activity and the infrastructure supporting it in Folkestone's harbor around 1890-1900.

The URL provided points towards more information about this image or similar collections, likely hosted by Loener, which may specialize in historical prints from Europe during that time period.

The force said there was “no documented feedback” that #British #Jews wanted #Maccabi #TelAviv fans barred from the game at #VillaPark, in #Birmingham, before it took place on November 6.

The local safety advisory group (SAG), comprising representatives of Birmingham city council, police and other authorities, decided in October to bar Maccabi supporters from the match — a move Sir #KeirStarmer said was “wrong."

Over 600 Cabinet Office files have been released under the 20-year rule, covering Tony Blair’s Labour government, 2004–2005. They include correspondence, policy papers, and detailed records on the privatisation of #British Rail, notably CAB164-2253, which covers legislative strategy for the #Railways Act 1993, franchise planning, pensions, and freight operations. Other files relate to Kim Philby’s archive, the 2012 Olympics bid, and the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. More than 80 documents are digitised and available online via The National Archives, with the remainder accessible in person at The National Archives in Kew, south-west #London.

A portrait-oriented image shows the green front cover of a confidential UK government Cabinet Office file. At the top, bold black text reads Cabinet Office, with the instruction that the file must not go outside the office. A white label in the centre is typed with the title BR Privatisation Bills. Handwritten dates indicate the file began on 23 July 1992 and ended in 1994. Several red stamps mark the folder as closed, specifically in 1994. Reference numbers are visible, including R 76/149 at the top right and CAB 164/2253 handwritten in large black ink at the bottom. A small table for referrals lists Mrs Horton with dates in 1993 and 1994. The word Confidential is printed at the very bottom.A confidential letter from 10 Downing Street dated 30 April 1993 regarding British Rail Franchising. The letter is addressed Dear Paul from the Private Secretary. It details a meeting between the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State to discuss rail privatisation progress. Key points include the completion of the Committee Stage of the Rail Privatisation Bill without government defeat, plans for thirty-four total franchises, and the appointment of Bob Horton as Chairman of Railtrack. The document features official letterhead, various handwritten annotations in blue and red ink, and a Cabinet Office filing stamp dated 4 May 1993. The word CONFIDENTIAL is printed at the top and bottom.A typed briefing document titled RAILWAYS BILL is split into two columns under the heading General. The left column lists questions and the right provides official responses. Questions ask if the Bill creates new bureaucracy, applies to all railways, or allows the privatisation of London Underground. Responses explain that most new bodies like Railtrack and the Franchising Director replace existing ones, and that London Underground will be exempt. It notes the Bill is expected to receive Royal Assent in the autumn and clarifies that funding includes up to five million pounds for a Regulator and ten million pounds for a Franchising Director, with a focus on taxpayer value for money.A typewritten document titled Key Facts on other countries’ rail privatisation plans summarises the rail situations in four countries. In Argentina, annual losses of £400 million are recorded, with plans for long-term private sector concessions while the state retains track ownership. France faces high subsidy costs, largely to service a £14 billion debt, and has no immediate plans to privatise. Germany anticipates a £5.5 billion loss in 1992 and intends to restructure its rail system into separate sectors ahead of privatisation in the next century. Japan restructured its railways in 1987, dividing the national network into seven publicly owned companies, with plans to float shares when market conditions improve.

loc.gov/pictures/item/95510992/

The image is a vintage poster featuring the portrait of Col. W.F. Cody, known as Buffalo Bill. The portrait itself depicts him with several objects superimposed over his head and body: an arrowhead on top of his hat, rifles held in each hand, gun barrels peeking out from behind his ears, a horse's head emerging above his right shoulder, a buffalo skull beside the word "Wild" on the left side. The colors are predominantly red with shades of brown for Cody's attire and beige for the background text areas.

The top portion reads 'Buffalo Bill’s' in bold white letters against a maroon backdrop, while below that is Col. W.F. Cody’s name in smaller but still prominent lettering. To his right side (viewer’s left), there's an illustration of what appears to be an American flag with stars and stripes composed out of rope.

There are some additional symbols like the yellow star on a red background within the portrait, which could symbolize success or western motifs often associated with Cody’s Wild West shows. The overall design is bold and evocative of Western themes popular in 19th-century America, reflecting Buffalo Bill's fame as an entertainer who showcased aspects of frontier life through his performances.

#AdmiraltyPier #Dover #England #DoverAdmiraltyPier #British #English #photography #historicalPhotos #photochrom

loc.gov/pictures/item/20026967

The image depicts a vintage scene at Dover Admiralty Pier in England, dating approximately between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A prominent feature is a large ramp leading from the land down to the water's edge where several ships are moored or docked, with one ship emitting black smoke indicating it may be powered by coal steam engines common during that era.

The pier itself extends into calm waters under an overcast sky with hints of blue peeking through. Alongside the paved walkway at the top level is a railing and street lamps, suggesting pedestrian pathways for visitors or workers. Several individuals dressed in period-appropriate attire are scattered across the scene: some walking along the promenade, others standing near lampposts.

The image captures an industrial port bustling with maritime activity against the backdrop of British seaside architecture. The overall atmosphere is one of historical significance and a glimpse into life during that time at Dover's Admiralty Pier, likely serving as a strategic entry point for naval vessels or merchant ships navigating through English waters.
