#otd 30 Jan. 1649 Charles I was executed. For Alice Thornton, looking back on this c.1669, Charles I was a 'martyr' who was 'cruelly murdered by the hands of blasphemous rebels, his own subjects, at Whitehall, London' (Book 1). thornton.kdl.kcl.ac.uk/posts/b

There's a mystery surrounding a meeting which Alice Thornton (1626-1707) reported to have happened the day before Charles I was sentenced to death on 27 Jan 1649 #otd. I've blogged about her 'curious account'. Read it and decide... did this secret meeting take place to try and save Charles I? thornton.kdl.kcl.ac.uk/posts/b @histodons @histodon @litodons #17thcenturyhistory #BritishCivilWars

#OTD in 1644, Alice Thornton's sister, Katherine Danby, gave birth to her 15th child at Middleham Castle while her husband was a fugitive in the civil war. Alice, on horseback, nearly drowned in the river en route: 'the poor mare drew up her forefeet & I perceived she did swim' (Book1). See further thornton.kdl.kcl.ac.uk/posts/b

I just finished a book of historical fiction about the manhunt for those who sentenced Charles I to death, Act of Oblivion by Robert Harris. First time I’ve read fiction about a historical period I have studied as a scholar. bookshop.org/p/books/act-of-ob 1/ (thread)
