#Broads

2025-11-16

‘Dr John Packman, who is about to step down as chief executive of the #Broads Authority (BA), has warned #climatechange is “already biting” in the waterways and that swathes of land will have to be given up to be used as #floodplains to protect homes in the upper reaches from major flooding’

Flooding is a difficult conversation which will have to be had at a local, regional and national level.

Whoever takes on this BA role will sadly find themselves in a political mine field.

While the #Britsh #canals have much to recommend them, when you have the open spaces of the #Norfolk #Broads on your #doorstep it's hard to say which are best.

I like to think I can balance the various differences fairly as we are lucky enough to have a small #canal #workers #cottage that fronts the #Bridgewater #Canal at #PrestonBrook where we plan to keep our #canoe after our house move.

Just realised! All the #dinghies on that Pontoon are #Yeoman (if not the drop keel variant the #kinsman

They used to be one of my favourite #halfdecker designs on the #Broads. Cheaper to maintain than the #traditional #wooden #classes found on the Broads, but I succumbed to the #SeaHawk which is a fabulous design for #solo #weekend #sailing

@qmacro @PKYo
I read one report that suggested it will take a year to fix.

That's a lot of #water to tread.

Is it me or have both of you been relatively quiet recently?

Also, it must be time to up the hashtag count. There must be more #canal and #broads #boaters out there.

@MrCopperpot
#Broadcaster includes #tidetables (essential if you plan to go through #GreatYarmouth and visit the quieter southern rivers of the #NorfolkBroads) and a table of cruising times between key points on the #Broads. Free paper copies of the magazine are available at the various visitor centres and most local pubs.

I don't do Facebook or other mainstream social media sites, but would recommend browsing around
forum.norfolkbroadsnetwork.com
There's plenty of locals and experienced visitors there who will answer questions (providing you demonstrate you've done some research of your own and just need a little more detail).

You can get a flavour of my boating experience of the Broads (from the mid 1960s) at:

@gregc @Hellybootwader. That is a fine location being neighbors with the Broads. #broads.

@Hellybootwader @Pollinators
I may be showing some ignorance here, but I'd be reluctant to spread any rock dust on the #soil here, particularly basalt as it's not locally occurring.

The #soil here is several feet of #peat over sand. The #dyke, you see to the right of compost cages in the photos, is the boundary of the #Broads #NationalPark, and a "Site of Special Scientific Interest".

The #Broads (the local #lakes) that give the area its name are famous as flooded medieval peat diggings.

Bank holiday #Broads 26/8

Trad Broads cruiser Silver Jubilee III moored in a secluded spot on the river Ant among reeds and trees with people on board sunbathing, swimming and paddleboarding on a sunny bank holiday Monday (river a lot busier than it looks), black and white

I do not wish to suggest simple reasons for complex water systems, but this piece suggests excessive rain is impacting the water level of the #Broads in #Norfolk while not considering why that is happening.

There is no consideration that it may be due to changing weather patterns caused by #climate breakdown. Why?

Last Saturday I had the honour of being invited for a day trip across the #Norfolk #Broads on the #wherry Albion. It was a very hot, cloudless and windless day, but I had a good time and got some very satisfying pictures.

I was a little hesitant about shooting the whole day in mono (albeit raw+JPEG, so I still had the option of colour later on) but it worked out really nicely!

Spoonbills have successfully bred on the Norfolk Broads for the first time in 400 years. I also appreciated that the article tells us that a baby spoonbill is referred to as a 'teaspoon'!
