A common inside joke among locals, but it is also a complex story with conspiracies and everything! What the can means, casually to locals, is north of where the checkerboard board used to be, a delicate secret shared only with the trusted initiate! As to where the checkerboard went and why and where is it now and the forgeries and outright lies, that's a tale for another day! 🍻

#SouthBruce staff to prepare report on second #NuclearWaste repository

As runners-up in the #NWMO's first site-selection process, the municipality of South Bruce is uniquely positioned as the organization now seeks a second site to bury nuclear waste deep underground.

Greg Cowan
Published Jul 28, 2025

Excerpt: "The proposed site faced significant public opposition, including from the Protecting Our Waterways – No Nuclear Waste group. Furthermore, the #SaugeenOjibwayNation, with its traditional territory stretching from the tip of the #BrucePeninsula to south of #Goderich, announced earlier this year that it plans to issue a #moratorium on future nuclear intensification and waste projects if no progress is made on addressing nuclear legacy issues in its territory.

" 'We will enforce this moratorium by all legal and political means necessary until a just and satisfactory resolution is in place,' the letter signed by #Nawash Chief #GregNadjiwon and #Saugeen Chief #ConradRitchie stated. 'Accordingly, the Nuclear Advisory Committee has been directed to pursue the resolution of legacy issues through agreements with Ontario Power Generation (#OPG), the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (#NWMO), other private nuclear operators, as well as the federal and provincial governments.' *The #Saugeen #FirstPeoples won their lawsuit 👏 Appeals court dismissed #Ontario government's appeal. Justice was finally served.*

Ontario's top court has upheld a lower court's ruling that a strip of #SaubleBeach, a popular Ontario tourist spot, has always belonged to a local #FirstNation.

In a 121-page decision on Monday, the Ontario Court of Appeal dismissed appeals brought by the Municipality of South #BrucePeninsula, the Ontario government, and several local families to the April 2023 ruling by Superior Court Justice Susan Vella.

"Justice was done today," said Saugeen First Nation Chief Conrad Ritchie in a statement, calling it a "powerful moment" for the Saugeen community.

In her 2023 decision, Vella ruled that "Chi-Cmiinh," a roughly two-kilometre strip of beach at the northern end of Saugeen Reserve No. 29, had always belonged to Chippewas of Saugeen First Nation, and that the federal government breached its treaty rights.

The Crown, Vella wrote, failed to protect and preserve the #treaty it signed in 1854, Treaty 72, in which the First Nation and neighbouring #Chippewas of Nawash surrendered Saugeen Peninsula, excluding five #Indigenous reserve territories. One would become #ReserveNo29.

I'm in Wiarton right now. An old artist friend of mine runs a food truck and art gallery. I'm glad to have stopped by. I haven't seen her for about ten years, and I'm glad she's doing well. I'm ordering a dill pickle poutine because it sounds weird. #FoodTruck #Witch #BrucePeninsula #RoadTrip #Wiarton

I am on a very much needed week away from everything. My friend and I are camping on the Bruce Peninsula and today was the first day cool enough to do a hike.

My DSLR got a lot of use, but I also used my phone and my Instax.

Once I am home I'm going to nightshade a bunch of my shots and post them.

A closeup of a striking dragonfly with a white thorax and white and black barred wings sitting on a dead branch at the end of a wetland. It is sunny and there are green weeds in the clear waterIn the reedy part of a bay in Georgian Bay, a white Egret is hunting for fish amongst the weeds. Just beyond the weeds give way to clear, deep water that seems to stretch on forever. A small white fishing boat is on the horizon.A rustic, well worn wooden boardwalk flanked by wetland plants. Three boards from the viewer is an orange, leaf-like butterfly, and just behind it to the left a garter Snake cautiously peers from between the boards.Three instax photos sit on a weathered picnic table. There is a red cord sneaking in on the top left of the photo.

Left to right: a weathered bench, long unused, and being reclaimed by the plants starting to overgrow it.

Two canoes parked on the shore, a wooden railing is in the foreground and there is a distant shoreline in the distance. The water is still.

Some of the remaining pictures I took from our weekend getaway. The #BrucePeninsula is a beautiful place. Lion’s Head is a great place.
I do absolutely hate how much litter we saw though as more and more people showed up. I guess this is why they’re enforcing paid parking so much.

I’m very glad we got to go on this trip. My partner will be very busy next month, so it was nice to get away before another #FireSeason starts
