Over 75% of the 115 leading crop species are dependent upon/benefit from animal pollination. Only 28 of these 115 crop species are wind & self-pollinated.
We need #bees #insects #birds #animals.
We need to realise this.
Fast.

The most hardworking of the urban #pollinators by far were #bumblebees.
Bees seemed more adaptable to the dynamics/constant flux of city life due to their highly developed orientation and learning abilities.

A German study found better pollination of flowering plants in urban rather than rural areas.
Despite greater diversity of flying insects in rural sites more #bees in cities resulted in more pollinated flowers of test plants.

…you to back off it’s just a bluff with no sting to back it up.
So when it comes to #bumblebees the males …(although fed better as larvae and then not tasked with contributing to the nest as adults) live a lonely homeless life constantly seeking a mate which most never…

When it comes to mating, for male bumblebees, size does matter - of the tibia that is. (Stop it!).

Males with longer fore and hind legs are more successful at mating.

So those lethargic #bumblebees that you find early in the morning on flowers during the summer…

Depending on the species male #bumblebees have specific height preferences at which they patrol spreading their queen attracting scent.
Some work their magic in the tree tops while others are more down to earth!
Despite mating being their raison d’être the sad fact is…

Male #bumblebees are produced by the queen fairly late in the nest cycle - mid to late summer usually. Males develop from unfertilised eggs - they have no father - and 100% of their genes will be in common with their mother - the queen!

Spoiler Alert:
Male #bumblebees don’t have a dad.
Once mature, males leave the nest never to return.
Males spend most of their short lives seeking sugar and a mate.
Most don’t get to mate.
Those that do never get to meet their offspring.
No male has a son.
They can’t sting!

When their nest is disturbed #bumblebees react by hissing.
This hissing sound is produced by vibrating their wings and is a defence mechanism used to warn off and deter predators entering the nest.

A little Saturday morning read for you.
Something we can all agree on maybe…on a day we need to look to what we have in common rather than what they seek to divide us by…
We all need #bees.
Nobody I’ve ever engaged with denies this.
Most people profess to love them.

Foraging #bumblebees carry, on average, roughly one quarter of their body weight in pollen and nectar.
Pollen is transported in the pollen sacs/baskets on their hind legs and nectar is stored in the ‘honeystomach’.

Bumblebee wings are flexible - twisting and bending during flight.
Research shows that this very flexibility increases load lifting capacity in #bees which positively affects foraging efficiency - they can carry more food!

Bumblebee wings are constructed of hollow rigid veins connected by an extremely fine membrane.
Despite this they are robust enough to withstand constant collisions whilst foraging.
