'Ex-special forces' men accused of attacking Canberra couple in their home

A woman tells the ACT Supreme Court two men pushed their way into her apartment, attacking her husband and kicking her in the face multiple times, as they declared they were trained by special forces in China.
So the #orange #turd of a #POTUS will openly accept a $400M #bribe from a #foreign country Qatar, the US #taxpayers will spend another $1B+ on it and then it'll become the #felon's private property? Waunarlwydd man jailed after knifepoint burglary
38-year-old Larry Black was one of two masked men who entered a property on Heol Pentyla in Llansamlet, brandishing a hammer and knives.
The men bound their victims with cable ties and demanded gold and money in the terrifying ordeal, but only got away with a set of keys and £500 after Black was bitten on the leg by one of the family’s dogs.
During interview following Black’s arrest later in March, he admitted his involvement in the incident, and he pleaded guilty to robbery in April.
Black has previous convictions for battery, shoplifting, drugs, and twelve separate house burglaries. He had been out of prison for a matter of weeks when he committed the Llansamlet robbery.
Black was handed an extended 13-year prison sentence at Swansea Crown Court. He has yet to reveal the identity of his accomplice.
Detective Sergeant Jonathan Holding from South Wales Police said: “Larry Black is a dangerous criminal who is all too happy to brandish knives and other weapons as a means of intimidating his victims.
“The thuggish behaviour of Black and his accomplice left a family terrified for their safety inside their own home. By not providing the name of his associate, Larry has proven that he is incapable of doing the right thing.
“There has been no remorse shown for his actions. Therefore, Larry Black will lose years of his life in prison.”

New data suggests Mid and West Wales have seen some of the biggest increases in home break-ins in the UK
The data, from the Office of National Statistics, covered the 12 months to December 2024.
It shows a mixed national picture: although burglary rates overall continue a slow decline, certain localities have seen sharp spikes in reported home break-ins.
Looking at the worst hit areas in England and Wales, Wales dominated the top 10, Powys topped this list as the most unsafe area based on home break ins with reports up by a staggering 81%. Ceredigion’s reports were up by 60% placing them fourth, and Carmarthenshire was eighth with a 49% surge.
RankAreaPercentage Rise in Residential Burglaries 20241Powys81.40%2Rugby68.00%3North Norfolk65.00%4Ceredigion60.30%5Staffordshire Moorlands52.00%6South Devon and Dartmoor51.40%7Lancaster50.40%8Carmarthenshire49.80%9Mid Sussex47.80%10Fylde44.70%Nationally, burglary continues its long-term decline, with residential break-ins across England and Wales falling by 3.5% in the year ending December 2024, according to the Office for National Statistics.
Swansea Bay News spoke to Dyfed Powys Police about the findings, with the force saying there was an error with the ONS figures, and while Powys has still seen a big increase it takes them off the top spot and takes Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion out of the top 10.
A spokesperson from Dyfed Powys Police said: “While it is difficult to comment on the exact reason for the increase in reports of burglaries, we are aware of national reporting issues due to our transition to a new crime system in 2023 which led to the figures being more than they should be in 2024.
“Although burglaries were recorded in 2023, they were not all attributed to individual areas and instead were categorised as unknown- this showed each area to be lower in 2023 than they actually were and therefore a bigger increase was seen in 2024. The amended figures are in the below table.
BCU/Year20232024% DifferenceCarmarthenshire30137825.58%Ceredigion13216726.51%Pembrokeshire2072091%Powys17627355.11%Unassigned36100%Total819103326.12%“Measures have been taken to correct the figures however this may not be reflected in the published ONS data.
“However, we acknowledge the significant impact that crimes of this nature have on victims and the worry it can cause to the wider community.
“Burglary is an incredibly invasive crime which we know has a significant impact on victims and this is why in March 2023, police forces across England and Wales implemented a new attendance policy to ensure police attendance at every reported residential dwelling burglary.
“Our officers are committed to attending and investigating these reports and we urge the public to continue reporting instances to us.
“Crime prevention and security advice can be found on our website : Protecting your home from crime | Crime prevention | Dyfed-Powys Police”
Speaking on the findings, Craig Morgan from SJL who analysed the ONS data said: “It’s deeply troubling to see such a sharp rise in home break-ins across parts of Wales. When Powys tops the list with an 81% increase, it’s not just a statistic, it’s a signal that many families are feeling more vulnerable in their own homes.
“While overall burglary rates may be declining nationally, these regional spikes expose a worrying disparity in how communities are being impacted. It’s clear we can’t afford to be complacent.
“More targeted support, better prevention strategies, and real accountability in law enforcement are urgently needed in the hardest-hit areas.”
Craig then went on to share his top tips to prevent home break ins.

Two arrests after ramraid on Fforestfach e-bike store
The “aggressive break-in” took place in the early hours of Monday morning at the Uprise Bikes Electric store on Kingsway at the Swansea West Industrial Estate in Fforestfach.
A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: “A man and a woman from Swansea have been charged after a van was deliberately driven into a Fforestfach business premises in the early hours of Monday morning before two electric bikes were stolen.
“40-year-old Matthew Morgan, from Blaenymaes, has been charged with burglary, theft of a motor vehicle and two counts of criminal damage.
“37-year-old Natalie Squibb, from Portmead, has been charged with burglary.
“Both have been remanded and will appear in Swansea Magistrates Court today.”
The Uprise Electric store, which opened in April 2024, temporaily closed on Monday following the raid, with the store saying on social media: “The Uprise Electric store will be temporarily closed due to an aggressive break-in attempt in the early hours of this morning.
“All security systems acted as expected and their plans were largely foiled but while the police do their job we need to keep the store closed.
“All customers picking up bikes will be contacted shortly, and don’t forget that if you need any help our Uplands store is open as usual.”
The store reopened the following day saying: “We’re back—and more fired up than ever. The coffee’s on, and the good vibes are flowing. We’ve still got some clean-up ahead, but nothing’s stopping us. The Uprise crew is back and ready to roll. Let’s ride!”

Trickster jailed after burgling elderly woman
43-year-old Melanie Morgan, of no fixed abode, entered an address on Morris Street, Morriston on March 28.
After speaking with the elderly occupant, who was unknown to her, Morgan made off with a purse that had been in the living room after the victim had left the room to find Morgan a painkiller and to call her a taxi.
The victim noticed the purse was missing the following day.
Swansea Crown Court heard that it was not the first time that Morgan had tricked her way into someone’s home before burgling them, having done so repeatedly over two decades. She has 16 previous convictions for 38 offences including thefts from shops, aggravated vehicle taking and handling stolen goods.
Judge Huw Rees said Morgan had a “devious streak” and only thought of herself.
Morgan pleaded guilty to burglary and has been sentenced to 45 months in prison.
Detective Sergeant Kristian Burt from South Wales Police said: “Melanie Morgan callously and shamelessly took advantage of the kindness of her elderly victim.
“As the judge said, Melanie Morgan has a devious streak and is a woman who only thinks about herself.
“We hope that she instead thinks about her actions during her time in prison.”

Aberavon burglar jailed for latest string of offences
Police say 38-year-old Marcus Bevan targeted no fewer than four addresses in the Port Talbot area on February 11 this year.
Swansea Crown Court heard that Bevan was a serial burglar who had committed 114 offences including numerous house and commercial burglaries and a conviction for burgling and trashing a local rugby club.
His latest burglary spree on 11 February this year saw hundreds of pounds worth of clothes taken from a property on Tydraw Street in Port Talbot with further incidents in nearby Tudor Street that same morning.
Doorbell footage from the properties submitted to the court showed a hooded figure trying front doors in the area around 6.30am. All of the properties targeted by Bevan were found to have been occupied by people on their own.
Bevan’s distinctive fur-trimmed hood was identified by a Police officer familiar with Bevan after looking at nearby CCTV footage.
Following a guilty plea at Swansea Crown Court, Bevan was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison
Detective Sergeant Jonathan Holding from South Wales Police said: “It is always disappointing to see when offenders continue to commit crimes, having undergone programmes designed to reduce their re-offending whilst in custody.
“During this latest spree of brazen offending, Marcus Bevan stole clothing from one address and house keys from another. He also tried the front doors of at least two other addresses, but was unable to gain access.
“Marcus Bevan is a prolific burglar who shows no sign of ever learning his lesson and changing his ways. He is rightly beginning a lengthy term in prison.”

Worst areas for burglaries in South Wales revealed but ‘shockingly low’ number result in a charge
South Wales Police has recorded more than 2,100 home burglaries in the last year alone, with just 10% resulting in a person being charged or summonsed, a new investigation has revealed.
Data obtained by Legal Expert via Freedom of Information Requests has found that 6,928 residential break-ins have been recorded by South Wales Police in the last three years
Of the 2,153 home invasions logged last year, just 209 (10%) resulted in a person being charged or summonsed.
While there will be cases that may still be under investigation, Legal Expert’s CICA (Criminal Injury Compensation Authority) specialist, Ellie Lamey says it is “shockingly low.”
“Being the victim of a burglary can be extremely invasive and traumatic not to mention those instances of aggravated burglary where weapons are involved.
“Moreover the shockingly low charge rate gives victims the impression that there is no support or justice following what can be in some cases, a life-altering event.”
In the vast majority of home invasions in 2024 (66%), South Wales Police concluded that the investigation was complete and that no suspect was identified.
While in 147 cases, police cited that a suspect was identified but that ‘evidential difficulties’ prevented further action.
South Wales Police also revealed the region’s home burglary hotspots in 2024.
Cardiff was revealed as the most targeted area for home invasions with 936 offences recorded last year.
A total of 307 residential break-ins were logged in Rhondda Cynon Taff and a further 299 in Swansea.
Vale of Glamorgan had 197 burglaries while Bridgend had 175 and Neath Port Talbot had 136.
Legal Expert’s CICA Specialist, Ms Lamey added: “Victims of burglaries can be left feeling abandoned and unsupported but it is important that they know there is help available for them.
“The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) for example, is a government-backed organisation that can offer compensation to blameless victims of violent crimes throughout the UK. The pay-outs awarded depend on the severity but range from £1,000 to £500,000 and can be a vital resource for victims who need support to recover from an often traumatic event.”
In 2024, there were 177,687 home burglaries reported across England and Wales. That’s an average of 487 burglaries a day.
Ms Lamey said: “Throughout my legal career, I have worked with victims and families of burglaries and the impact can be long-lasting. Thankfully, I’ve been able to bring even a small comfort by securing them the compensation they deserve to help to start to rebuild their lives.”
