ProRep doesn't have any fancy animated videos, yet. But this video by FairVote Canada ( @fairvote.ca ) nicely illustrates how an open-list proportional representation system would work for elections to the California legislature.

Just imagine "districts" for "ridings," "Bear" for "Moose," "Quail" for "Puffin" and, uh, "Beaver" for "Beaver." Voila.

Ugh. I may have to get on bluesky, at least for some stuff. I was trying to follow the action on #SB79 and some other housing bills today. Lots of people live posting the hearing over there today, legislators, advocates, etc. But it seems like just very few people here are tuned into #caleg or other stuff I want to follow. (Which makes sense, of course, given the different overall numbers of users.) I really like the everyday anarchism of the fediverse, but it can be hard sometimes.

This Political Science research paper shows that Rent Hikes and Evictions by Landlords are the main cause of Homelessness in California and that it CAN be controlled. #Homelessness #CALeg #GavinNewsom #LA preprints.apsanet.org/engage/a

‘Ditch the switch’: It’s time to finally do away with daylight saving time

If your doctor said you participated in an activity linked to more traffic accidents, chronic sleep deprivation and higher health risks, wouldn’t you want to stop it?

It’s an activity all Californians partake in each year: “springing forward” into daylight saving time each March, and “falling back” into standard time in November. Because of the inconvenience of and health risks posed by this ritual, I introduced Senate Bill 1413 last legislative session to “Ditch the Switch” by instead implementing permanent standard time. The proposal did not result in getting rid of the switch, but I am still committed to finding ways to end this unhealthy, inconvenient practice.

Most people agree to ditch the switch, but the debate lies in which switch to ditch.

You might be wondering: “Haven’t Californians already approved doing just that?” In 2018…

Plastic grocery bags "aren’t being reused in any meaningful way, and they can’t be recycled,” writes the LA Times. “We need a do-over — a second plastic bag ban that fulfills the promise that lawmakers made in 2014.”

California Senate approves the amended SB-1413. Originally filed by Senator Niello to #DitchDST, #DitchTheSwitch, and restore permanent Standard Time, it was amended by committee only to study energy effects of such action. It next goes to #CALeg Assembly. youtube.com/watch?v=BZjjkyLq2Q

Was just thinking about how disappointing it's been that no Democrats have really pushed back on the arbitrary new return to office policy Gov. Newsom laid down. I don't know if Hoover, a Republican, actually gives a shit about CO2 emissions from commuting, or if he sees an opportunity to pick up some suburban state worker votes, or if he's just trolling. But I'll take it.

California (#CALeg) Senate’s Energy Committee and Appropriations Committee have rewritten SB-1413.

Originally filed to #DitchDST, #DitchTheSwitch, and restore permanent Standard Time, in 2024, at no cost—it would now only *study* Daylight Saving Time, in 2027, for $600,000.

California’s rewritten SB-1413 would only study energy effects of DST—while ignoring health, safety, education, and productivity.

DST has already been studied hundreds of times. It does not save energy. Even if it did, it would not justify its many greater harms to public well-being.

Please contact California Senate leadership, ask them to restore SB-1413’s original wording. 👉 senate.ca.gov/senators/senate-

Also contact your own state senator, tell him/her to support permanent Standard Time. 👉 findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov
