#UnpopularOpinion / #HotTake: I think it's the right call for @gnome to "Stop being a mad scientist" and simply offload a lot of [quite security-critical] stuff onto #SystemD.

  • After all both are being bankrolled mostly by the big 3 #Linux distros and neither #RedHat nor #Suse nor #Canonical are willing to spend money on essentially redundant work if they can avoid it...

Tho @BrodieOnLinux is wrong re: "Linux is #Unix" because technically #macOS (if we take in any #POSIX-esque system into account)!

  • That being said, it does necessitate extra work by #BSD|s to run #Gnome.

@sjvn@mastodon.social @sjvn@mastodon.social I still remember when #Canonical #Ubuntu removed bug 1 about #Windows, everyone was shocked. Now #Linux and Windows aren't rivalries, I am not surprised considering the path Linux has taken for the past few years

Well, it’s been a while since I made this song in January. It didn’t catch the attention of the people unfortunately.

However, I have been busy reworking this song as I thought it was a bit lackluster. Take a listen and let me know what you think.

Please @ubuntu, let me know what you think as well!

Ubuntu 25.10 is adding rust-hwlib, a new Rust library, to its default installations. Developed by Canonical, this library will help users check hardware certification status and retrieve machine information, initially for x86-64 systems. Plans are to backport it to earlier Ubuntu versions.

A toxic organization is always hostile to outsiders, but manages to mask its hostility in various ways:
Creating the illusion that the people in it, and the way it works is somehow special, that the reason it is not welcoming is not because it is hostile, but because it's members are so special, because only a selected few are fit to work there, otherwise it will fail it's special tasks.

This is pretty common across the #it business, look for red flags, such as long interview process with weird questions and tasks, (many people discussed #canonical in this respect), or fixation on the part of the interviewers on specific traits which are not really the focus of the job at hand (e.g. favorite text editor).

#OpenSouthCode is about to start in the stunning La Térmica in the beautiful city of Málaga.

Also #Ubucon Europe is co-located at the same venue.

Can't wait for the talks, the people and the open source vibes!

I'll be speaking about "Your very first contribution to open source" at 17.30 local time.

In case you miss this year's event, talks are recorded. And don't forget to book your trip for next year!

Thanks to my employer #Canonical who made it possible for me to attend.

David welcomes the participants of Opensouthcode 2025.Me in front of la térmica.Picture of the stunning entrance of la térmica.Ubucon Europe 2025 is also co-located.

@rl_dane I wished @frameworkcomputer would do this too, because #Lenovo has #enshittified the #ThinkPad brand so hard and refused to support me with a #P15v (alongside #Canonical #Intel & #Fibocom with regards to getting the #850GL / #XMM7360-based #WWAN working on this €3,5k+ "#UbuntuCertified" System) that I'm gonna go with a #Framework once my #X230Tablet dies.

I’m sure this means , and have fixed all issues that make this desktop totally unusable for blind people. Right? Right??

[EDIT] shortcuts and navigation should be OK, but Orca still can’t handle pointer coordinates — thanks @GTK for clarifying [/EDIT]

@Natanox i kept miss-identifying the "proper" components on bug-/issue-/feature trackers (#github / #bugzilla / #Canonical #Ubuntu #launchpad), so i've switched to hash-tagging my fave projects on #SocialMedia, instead.

Instead of getting "my issue" rejected or closed as "irrelevant", because i failed to ID&target the correct COMPONENT, i just toot about it on the #Fediverse, let #Karma sort it out! 😅

I consider this a win-win "shituation"! 🤣

#Kubuntu has switched to a new installer, and now can‘t handle encrypted LVM anymore. This is known for over a year now, but apparently only a low priority to fix. I guess this means moving on to another #Linux distribution, that allows more than the most basic disk configurations. #Ubuntu #Canonical

#Canonical is finally taking Bazaar out the back and putting a bullet in its head, or "Phasing out" as they put it on #Ubuntu Discourse. :) Sad times. I used to prefer bzr to git, but haven't used it for years now. :( discourse.ubuntu.com/t/phasing-ou...

Screenshot of Ubuntu discourse:

"Phasing out Bazaar code hosting. What is Bazaar code hosting?
Bazaar is a distributed revision control system, originally developed by Canonical. It provides similar functionality compared to the now dominant Git.

Bazaar code hosting is an offering from Launchpad to both provide a Bazaar backend for hosting code, but also a web frontend for browsing the code. The frontend is provided by the Loggerhead application on Launchpad.

Sunsetting Bazaar
Bazaar passed its peak a decade ago. Breezy 36 is a fork of Bazaar that has kept a form of Bazaar alive, but the last release of Bazaar was in 2016. Since then the impact has declined, and there are modern replacements like Git.

Just keeping Bazaar running requires a non-trivial amount of development, operations time, and infrastructure resources - all of which could be better used elsewhere.

Launchpad will now begin the process of discontinuing support for Bazaar.

Timelines
We are aware that the migration of the repositories and updating workflows will take some time, that is why we planned sunsetting in two phases...."
