Debian 13 RC2 fixes APT CD-ROM issues for USB installs

The second release candidate for the Debian 13 “Trixie” installer is now live, and it contains a lot of interesting changes surrounding different areas of the installer. This makes sure that your Debian install becomes smoother than before.

One of the most notable changes in this release candidate of the installer is that it addresses a bug where the Debian installer would not remove the APT CD-ROM source from the final installation if Debian was installed to your computer using a USB flash drive, which is becoming common these days. Modern laptops don’t usually come with the built-in CD-ROM reader.

Because of this, Debian users who have successfully installed this distro will be met with APT telling them to insert the Debian installation disk upon trying to install any package. They’ll be met with this message:

Media change: please insert the disc labeled 'Debian GNU/Linux 12.10.0 "Bookworm" - Official amd64 DVD with firmware 20250315-10:09'in the drive '/media/cdrom/' and press [Enter]

This adds an extra step where you’ll have to comment the CD-ROM source manually by editing the /etc/apt/sources.list file. You’ll have to look for entries like this:

deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 12.10.0 "Bookworm" - Official amd64 DVD with firmware 20250315-10:09] bookworm contrib main non-free-firmware

The change has been done in this commit in Debian’s GitLab instance, where bugs #1102140 and #1103650 have been fixed.

You can see other changes made to this release candidate of the Debian installer.

I'm going to counter-program the war news this morning & share a deep dive into what I'm playing with right now. Travel with me to a time 30 years ago when newsrooms still existed, and the TV networks began dabbling with releasing press kids on CD-ROM. My wife, who worked on a features desk at the time, saved these two gems from the dumpster 30 years ago. Let's take a look!

Welcome home, old friends.

(Finally got my hands on a physical copy of the mythical October 1993 disc, @textfiles ... will upload any missing, of course!)

Some of the Simtel and CICA have the classic "Walnut Creek" wizard logo described in the next photo. The classic Walnut Creek CDROM wizard logo. A stylized line drawing. Wearing a black robe with white stars of varying sizes, with a perfectly round head/face (perhaps intentionally CD-like) and a white beard. He is mostly facing us, right hand held up somewhat high, left arm fully extended, hand holding a simple wand, which is emitting or tracing a clockwise swirl of a series of black stars. The hands are simplified and rounded (no fingers). The overall body posture is one of motion, perhaps even leaping up and forward slightly in the act of casting. This one is on a dark-ish orange background. "Walnut Creek CDROM" appears below.

@Lilith Das Versenden einer CD-ROM ist auch symbolisch treffend: der Justizvollzug ist in vielen Bereichen technisch im 20. Jahrhundert stehen geblieben.

🚀 Oh joy, another "soft launch" of digital archaeology where we can all bask in the glory of 1997's "innovation"—just what the world needed! 🤦‍♂️ Let's all pretend we're excited to sift through 5.5GB of ancient MacFormat cover discs, because who doesn't want to relive the glory days of dial-up and floppy disks? 📀✨
