people are genuinely surprised when i explain that #Covid is actually still circulating in the local population. they had believed the denialist rhetoric fed to them by the conservative provincial government that the pandemic was over.

it's definitely not over.

me, i always wear an N95 mask 😷 indoors. i simply cannot afford to get any more Covid in my brain - that could finish me off and force premature retirement from my job!!!!!

I don't think this has been reported before. Fellow Beach Boy Al Jardine says the decline in #BrianWilson's health began with #LongCovid. #CovidIsNotOver

@augieray And for no other reason than "I don't want to wear a mask", on a global scale. Shameful.

I'm having Post-Covid again, ...
because YOU couldn't wear a mask.

Last time it was 2 months of overexhaustion and constant brain fog. I'll forget to answer a LOT of questions and requests I get from fedizens and I'm sorry for that.

Try to reach out again in fall* if I don't answer.

*I mean the season, but if the global fascist empire has fallen by then, good.

I’m going to cry. My friend in her early 40s who contracted Covid last month driving a bus for graduations just found out she has a heart problem. She never had a heart problem before. The 4 to 6 or 8 or however many Covid shots she’s had didn’t save her. She doesn’t wear a mask because she’s a Democrat who believe believed the Covid vaccine would save her and now she has a fucked up heart.

Boo, they have tightened the #Covid vaccine eligibility criteria in the #UK. Having high BMI no longer counts. Neither does being a carer for someone who is eligible, which was scrapped ages ago.

The pharmacist agrees this is nonsense, and said they'll probably loosen them for the October jab - the UK Government is still pretending it's a seasonal disease in the face of all evidence.

I'll #WearAMask anyway, especially with an NB.1.8.1 super-spreader event in #Manchester this weekend (#Parklife festival).

Ok, so remember the whole "COVID-19 seems to have superantigenic properties but it's not clear which of its proteins drive that" thing?

@Kancept just to be pedantic - since one byte wrong will wreck a program:

during the pandemic

would more accurately be "during the state of emergency"

we are currently still in a physical, actual pandemic (actually pandemics plural - the HIV pandemic is ongoing too). Only the politically defined state of pandemic emergency has lifted.

Happy to provide citations if you wish.

…even with a five-day isolation period, around 40% of people were still potentially infectious at the end of that time.
So five days of isolation is really an absolute minimum!

IgA autoimmunity and coagulation among post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC) patients with persistent respiratory symptoms: a case-control study — Gomes et al.
"we found that IgA antibodies correlate inversely with clinical symptoms and directly with clotting parameters, suggesting a possible link between autoimmunity and coagulation, but in a unexpected direction as lower levels of IgA predicted more respiratory symptoms among PASC cases."

“We gave the virus optimal conditions to keep developing and wanted to see whether it would eventually attenuate—basically weaken—over time. It didn’t,” Dr Foster said.

“In all cases, by the time we stopped, the viruses were still growing happily and picking up mutations.”

There were new mutations which popped up repeatedly in different strains – a phenomenon known as convergent evolution – as well as changes which mirrored those seen in real world outbreaks.

The similarities suggest the virus may be naturally inclined to develop certain changes, regardless of the environment and external pressures, said senior author William Rawlinson, a Conjoint Professor with the School of Biomedical Sciences.

Some mutations which help the virus adapt may be driven by the makeup of the virus itself, rather than a bid to evade immunity, he said.

“Some of the changes we saw in humans were also happening in vitro, which suggests it’s not just about transmissibility or immune evasion—it’s also about the structure and function of the virus itself,” Prof. Rawlinson said.

“They could develop these important mutations even in the absence of a catalyst.”

Covid is on the rise again in Aotearoa. The new, highly transmissible variant NB1.8.1 is the dominant variant now (58.3% according to poops.nz).
RNZ has written an actually useful article for a change: Covid-19 isolation and testing rules in 2025: What you need to know
"So five days of isolation is really an absolute minimum. To protect those around us, we should all take extra precautions for a few more days, such as wearing a mask and delaying visiting friends and family members who might be vulnerable."

"Aside from staying home when sick, clean indoor air and good quality masks are highly effective protections that NZ has been really slow to pick up. Once we do, we'll never want to go back to the same level of sickness we experience each winter."
