My commodore 1702 is getting closer to being usable again. Well, reflowed every solder joint on the back of the tube, and the weird artifacting is gone, but its still insanely blurry and flickering very lightly. At thjs point im thinking maybe just a picture and focus knob adjustment will get it the rest of the way.

New CRT monitor pickup! 19" Gateway 2000 EV900, manufacture date September 1997. Maxes out at 1600x1200 screen resolution. Has a pretty decent picture quality and geometry, no apparent defects after looking it over a bit.

This is far and away bigger and better than anything else I previously owned. Got it for a decent price compared to other local offerings. Looking forward to some retro gaming on this thing over the weekend!

Schreibtisch voll.

Fascinated with this computer. It's beautiful, mighty powerful in their time, and built like a tank.

Many years ago, I lived in an apartment with two roommates in the, ah, affordable part of our town. The building was fairly old and not well insulated, so considering Canadian winters can be a bit brisk, my bedroom could get quite cold - however, that big for the time 17" CRT was really good at keeping me a little warmer.

Bill Gates is such a genius. PC CRT layouts are linear horizontally, but nonlinear vertically. This way, a crt scanner sweeping left to right linearly can produce circular pixels that are all equidistant from each other.

And, for every individual color a circle of equidistant pairs of triangles surround it that are composed of the colors it isn't. So blue is surrounded by red and green, green is surrounded by red and blue, and red is surrounded blue and green. This is so genius.

@zombierustpunk Yeeeah, okay fair 😅 But hear me out! Have you ever seen what artist Nam June Paik was able to do with old CRT TVs? 🙌

@aallan @Raspberry_Pi I feel like people who want to do a #RetroGaming #RaspberryPi build with an older #CRTMonitor could get a lot of use out of these. You'd probably sell a lot.

aaand i forgot to add my age to my introduction...so anyway i'm 21 lol. another thing i forgot is to mention that i primarily play on #pc but i also play on my #3ds and #ps2 (with an actual #crtmonitor !). I #emulate many #nes #snes and sometimes #ps1 games as well! either on steam officially or unofficially. you can see the majority of my pc collection on steamcommunity.com/id/neguuy , the rest is obscure fangames and stuff like #tetris #tetrisgrandmaster3, feel free to ask me about it :)

A CRT Monitor Restoration

Nothing quite says vintage computer like a dedicated glass terminal. We enjoyed [Adam's] restoration of an Acorn CRT monitor. The monitor is old enough to have that vintage vibe, but not so old as to be an antique.

The 14 inch monitor had a common problem: a defective power switch. Replacing a switch shouldn't be a big deal, of course, but these old CRT monitors have exciting voltages inside and require special care.

One common issue, for example, is the fact that the old CRTs are really large capacitors and can hold a dangerous charge for some time. The easiest way to handle the potential problem is to make sure the device is unplugged, ground a screwdriver blade, and push the blade under the second anode cap. Most of the time, nothing happens. Once in a while, though, you'll hear a loud pop and you just saved yourself a nasty shock.

Even though the actual repair was pretty mundane, the teardown was a great nostalgia trip and while we don't want to give up our LCD, we do like the old glass.

CRTs have a long history and came a long way before their last gasps. They even took a turn as mass storage devices.
