Pretty blown away by this paper from Piotr Sapiezynski and team at Northeastern and Princeton, presented at #CSCW2024: dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3686917
For lots of good legal and moral reasons, Facebook doesn't allow advertisers to explicitly target ads to "White Republicans" or "Black Democrats"... but there are lots of ways to get around this through "proxies".

Love this tool, NewsGuesser, from a team at UCSD, presented at #CSCW2024 by Kristen Vaccaro. Her team was interested in why people so seldom use tools like Allsides.com to see news with different ideological points of view. NewsGuesser leverages curiosity and gamification to reduce selective exposure, helping people encounter a broader range of news online.

#cscw2024 debate Proposition Four: CSCW should accept research where only AI systems are interacting without any humans involved.

Audience initial views on this one are pretty skewed...

#cscw2024 debate Proposition Three: CSCW should desk reject papers that don't have more than one human.

Fwiw, there's no prescriptive guidance about what it means for a paper to "have a human."

Best #cscw2024 session so far: Amy Bruckman moderates a debate (among Andreas Monroy-Hernandez, Jeffrey Bigham, Meredith Morris, and Michael Bernstein) about whether human-AI interaction is CSCW.

Arrived at #cscw2024 this morning. Always good to see friendly, familiar faces. Already excited to begin wrapping my head around new research ideas. Also interested to note that this is also the context where I always seem to be prompted to reflect on my social media presence (generally poor) and values (which platform(s) to use? are they the "right" ones to maintain important professional and public safety connections while not being subject to the whims of megalomaniacal billionaires?)

Coming very soon: #cscw2024 panel on "Is Human-AI Interaction CSCW?" alongside @asb, @jbigham, @andresmh, and Merrie Morris!

If you're in the same boat as I was last year, have faith. Many applications have a rolling deadline. Once I applied, I pinged the committee.

Earlier is better but being late is not a killer.

The journey of a thousand miles starts with a step.

Continuous improvement >> delayed perfection.

The CS academic job market is crazy.

Last year, I was behind because I got on the market very late (after CSCW, late Oct).

Many peers had their statements done.

I had nothing-- no statements or websites. I was battling a chronic health condition and thousand other stressors.

I took the leap of faith. I started the process; few friends and some strangers helped.

It was a decent run (IIRC >7 TT offers).

If you're in the same boat ....
