The Megajournal project, spearheaded by the Chinese University Library and Chinese University Press, is also supported by the Faculty of Arts and the Department of Translation at CUHK.

The Journal of Translation Studies is still a bilingual, double-blind peer-reviewed publication, edited jointly by Lawrence Wong and Prof. James St. Andrรฉ, with an international editorial board. We are also happy to arrange special issues. Contact us if you have a topic that you would like to guest edit with us.

The new online platform has all articles in the new series, as well as volumes 9โ€“14 of the first series; in other words, everything since 2006. The earlier volumes will be added gradually over the course of 2026.

If you have published an article with us, you may now distribute the final published version of your article freely anywhere you like.

If you have not yet published with us, now is a great time to submit your article for publication in an established, open-access journal at no cost.

Our students were deeply inspired by the intricate connections between visual art and linguistic expression. The exhibitions provided invaluable context for understanding how cultural nuances are conveyed across different mediaโ€”a lesson that resonates strongly with the art of translation. The experience reinforced the importance of cultural literacy in our field and sparked meaningful discussions about the role of translators and interpreters as cultural mediators.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Hong Kong Museum of Art for their generous support and for waiving the entry fee to the Min Chiu Society exhibition. Special thanks to Ms. Carina Khan for her insightful docent tour, and to Dr. Chester Cheng, Dr. Sienna Xu, Dr. Wei Jiang, and Ms. Hongmei Yang for making this enriching experience possible for our students.

On the afternoon of Friday, October 31st, 35 Master of Arts students from CUHKโ€™s Department of Translation had the privilege of exploring two remarkable exhibitions at the Hong Kong Museum of Art. Our students from the Arts Translation, Simultaneous Interpreting, and Consecutive Interpreting courses experienced firsthand how art transcends language and culture.

The visit featured two captivating exhibitions: Engaging Past Wisdom: Min Chiu Society at Sixty-five, which offered profound insights into Chinese cultural heritage, and Shopping in Canton: China Trade Art in the 18th and 19th Centuries (Phase V), where we were expertly guided by Ms. Carina Khan. Her docent tour brought the historical narratives of cross-cultural exchange to life, perfectly complementing our studentsโ€™ studies in translation and interpretation.

The Department of Translation welcomes local applicants, mainland Gaokao candidates, and international students. This year, several students joined via international admissions. We invited them to share their backgrounds and experiences. Here is a reflection from Sofia:

I am Sofia from Macao, a freshman majoring in Translation. Before embarking on this new journey at CUHK, I had studied in an English-medium school for 12 years. Many might have asked โ€“ Why are you still choosing translation as your major in this era of AI? Itโ€™s my family background and personal interests that sparked my passion for translation. Growing up in a bilingual environment, Iโ€™ve always been fascinated by how languages connect people. On top of that, I love watching films from all over the world, where subtitles and good translation are essential for understanding and enjoyment.

Returning to campus, I was initially very anxious, afraid I wouldnโ€™t keep up with the study pace. The curriculum in the Translation Department is rigorous, and the professorsโ€™ requirements are meticulous, yet this pressure is gradually helping me regain my academic rhythm. The substantial space for discussion in class often sparks new insights, which is truly gratifying.

My relationship with translation is perhaps like my relationship with this city: both an observer and a participant. I explore within the space between words, inhabiting the gaps between understanding and misunderstanding. In the future, I hope to continue exploring the intersection of translation and culture, learning how to convey the soul of a work across different cultures without letting it be simplified into mere superficial words.

Whether you have just walked out of university gates or have spent some time navigating the world of work, learning is always a dark path of exploration and trial-and-error. But it is precisely in these dim corners that you can truly perceive the boundaries of language and feel the weight of words.

Sometimes, in moments of frustration, I might mutter a few phrases in Taiwanese, resulting in blank stares from my classmates. These fleeting moments make me acutely aware of the invisible seam between language domainsโ€”a rift that translators eternally attempt to mend, yet which forever persists. It is within these very seams that I realize: a translatorโ€™s cultural background not only influences word choice but also subtly shapes the emotional rhythm experienced by the reader.

Now, at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, I am rediscovering the meaning of โ€œliving between languages.โ€ CUHKโ€™s translation program not only emphasizes the integration of theory and practice but also provides a true environment of multilingual coexistenceโ€”here, language is not just a subject; it is life. This semester, I am enrolled in ๐˜ˆ๐˜ฅ๐˜ท๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ ๐˜›๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜š๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ด, ๐˜ˆ๐˜ณ๐˜ต๐˜ด ๐˜›๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ, ๐˜‰๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ถ๐˜ข๐˜ญ ๐˜Œ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜š๐˜ฌ๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ด, and the ๐˜Œ-๐˜Š ๐˜›๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ž๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฌ๐˜ด๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ. When I first arrived, I felt that Hong Kong was a city constantly growing upwards. The slender buildings pierced the sky like blades, each floor packed with perhaps ten units and each unit further subdivided into multiple studios.

I often wonder: do those who come here from afar all harbor the dream of a sharp, upward ascentโ€”a swift rise to the top?

I once spent a year in my Chinese major at National Taiwan Normal University, immersed in the Four Books and Five Classics and other canonical historical and philosophical texts. In truth, the most rigorous academic work I undertook then was analyzing the Three Heroes of the early Han Dynasty for a final examโ€”or perhaps tracing Sima Qianโ€™s values through the structural variations in the Records of the Shiji. Those experiences cultivated in me a habit of scrutinizing linguistic detailsโ€”a character's radical, the subtle weight of a toneโ€”each a minute clue quietly revealing an authorโ€™s worldview and thought process.

During my time in the English Department, I encountered translation theory for the first time and began to focus on how language reflects culture. I came to realize that a translatorโ€™s choices are often an expression of a cultural stance.

A few course highlights:
โ€ข Comparing at translations of the same text: we will read passages from three English versions of ่ฅฟ้Š่จ˜ translated by Anthony Yu, Arther Waley, and Julia Lovell.

โ€ข Translating โ€˜weirdโ€™ language: we will explore strategies for translating different examples of non-standard English and Chinese, including experimental writing (that deliberately disregards linguistic convention), second-language writing, machine-translation, and computer-generated text. For example: how might one translate Georges Perecโ€™s novel La Disparition (translated into English as A Void), an entire novel written without the letter โ€œeโ€?

โ€ข Workshopping a poem as a class: we will work collectively to produce a collaborative translation.

Hi! Iโ€™m Capri, a recent graduate of CUHK Translation. Iโ€™ve just completed my overseas internship, a two-month journey with ORIBI Incubator in South Africa, an impact incubator that cultivates social innovation. As a Programme Officer Intern, I co-hosted an entrepreneurship training workshop that supported high school girls from townships to develop confidence in their ideas. I also conducted a review of marketing strategy for the organization and shadowed administrative tasks with the Food System team, gaining a broader view of how community-based innovation connects to systemic change.

We also shared how weโ€™re using AI in our work and teachingโ€”whatโ€™s working, what isnโ€™t, and what weโ€™re curious to try next.

During our SWOT session, we looked at our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, and left with clearer priorities and practical next steps for the year ahead.
