#CXL sounds really cool as a #RAM #expansion.

That being said #Enterprise #Database users that have to deal with #BinaryBlob garbage like #SAP or god forbid #Oracle will love it to save #LicensingCosts as they don't need to get #MultiSocket systems for that...

  • Espechally since it doesn't count against the RAM limits of the #CPU!
Yet another DAMON-citation from a HCDS'25 paper is found. The paper discusses h/w-based CXL coherency management.

Back in the day, you would upgrade your PC's RAM by installilng cards into AT bus slots. The equivalent today is using CXL expansion cards on systems that support certain CXL profiles.

Now, you can just add a whole new rack shelf of RAM to add another 96 slots 😅

The Current State Of #CXL Support On #Linux
With Linux 6.11 there is now a notifier handler to deal with newly-created CXL memory regions to have their abstract distance metrics calculated, which is needed for proper memory tiering with regards to performance capabilities. The CXL code in Linux 6.11 also has a number of fixes, XOR math is added to address the CXL DPA to SPA translation, and various other updates.

My oh my do I want to get some #CXL (compute express link) gear to play with. Imagine having one DRAM pool for all your nodes and one SSD storage pool (tiered, within ONE order of magnitude speed of DRAM, except maybe for your coldest storage!) And this is going to get beyond the "home lab" space and into your network, assuming DRAM remains costly. This will save so much money! Imagine your notebook is perfectly reasonable 16gb ram on the train, but has 128 or 256GB the second you join work net.

A couple of OSDI'24 papers[1,2] for memory tiering that references and exploring DAMON as a part of them are available now.
