#CadSoft

@dragonminded I guess with #Autodesk enshittifying their toolchain with more and more expensive subscriptions did force a lot if folks to actually invest time and effort and money into #KiCad.

  • And TBH, they deserve it, because there needs to be real #competition to Autodesk's stuff even if it's just for hobbyists and small-scale projects.

And yes, I still regret not having bought #Eagle when #CadSoft offered a #NonCommercial / #Hobbyist license for €125 one-time, cuz I'd still be rickin' that today.

@keira_reckons *reminds me that I failed to buy myself a #OneTimeLicense for #EAGLE when #CadSoft still existed...

@ahriboy @tagesschau @Dexruus @jesterchen Granted, lack of regulatory action allowed companies like Adobe and espechally Autodesk to de-facto monopolize several software fields and discontinue One-Time Purchase options.

Yes, I still hate myself for not having bought the €125 perpetual non-commercial hobbyist license for #Eagle when #CadSoft was still around...

But regulators like @EU_Commission & @kartellamt@social.bund.de don't seem to grasp the serious of these #monopolization efforts...

@miah #Autodesk - like #Adobe - is literal poison to the #Software industry and should be forcibly dismantled by #regulators for attempting to monopolize the industry.

The biggest regret in terms of #Software I have was not buying the "#Eagle hobbyist license" for €125 back in 2008 when #CadSoft still existed!

TIL that #EAGLE (the EDA software) is older than several of my peers, having begun its existence in 1988 as a DOS app (and even had an OS/2 PM version in the early 90s.) It had some sketchy moments as part of its original parent, #CadSoft, who even released software that spied on their users and ratted them out to the CadSoft legal department!

It's been a product of #autodesk for about 7 years and it only took them 5 to effectively kill it. They discontinued new versions a couple of years ago but announced today they would stop selling and supporting it entirely in three years.

RIP EAGLE, killed by capitalism. #kicad is nice. I like it. Also, I hear #librepcb is moving along rapidly, but haven't tried it myself.
