#CaernarfonCastle

After we'd completed our circuit of Anglesey in 2011, including visits to Beaumaris Castle, an aquarium, a neolithic burial ground, and numerous photo stops, we crossed back onto the mainland and visited another castle. This was Caernarfon Castle, built in 1283 on the orders of Edward I and designed to look like the walls of Constantinople. It was captured during the Welsh rebellion around a decade later but retaken the following year, was a Royalist stronghold in the English Civil War, and was used as the site of the investitures of the Princes of Wales in the 20th century.

It's an overcast day with deep, black and grey, moody clouds in the sky. We're at a high elevation, clearly on the wall of a medieval castle and we're looking mainly at another wall that angles away from us to the left. The wall is mostly intact, high on this side then stepping up twice more to large crenellations on the highest wall. There are two towers along the wall, one near us and only half-seen and the other at a point where the main wall angles slightly inwards. Both towers are square-based, about a third higher than the walls but also containing a smaller square tower of their own in one corner which rises yet further. The ground beneath us is grassy and mown short with some paths for visitors. Over the castle walls in the distance there are fields, trees, and rolling hills.

Daily #Wales part 6. To be fair I'm now pretty much castled out. There are only so many spiral staircase you can climb in one holiday and I've reached my limit.

#Caernarfon today, in shorts no less! I don't know whether my enthusiasm isn't there or what but while #CaernarfonCastle is pretty spectacular it wasn't my favourite. It'd be hell in high season.

#Llyn Peninsular tomorrow so fingers crossed for more nice weather.

We took a trip to North Wales in February to get new designs for jigsaws and for a new shop opening in Beddgelert who had contacted us. Work sucks having to visit locations like this haha :) This is the stunning Caernarfon Castle in North Wales. I wanted blue skies and fluffy white clouds, but being Wales we got this instead. However, I rather like the moodiness of it.

The medieval toilet or latrine, then called a privy or garderobe, was a primitive affair, but in a castle, one might find a little more comfort and certainly a great deal more design effort than had been invested elsewhere. Practicality, privacy, and efficient waste disposal were all considered and, even today, one of the most prominent and easily identifiable features of ruined medieval castle...worldhistory.org/article/1239/ #BeaumarisCastle #CaernarfonCastle #CaerphillyCastle

The Ricoh Auto 35 is definitely the coolest camera I've bought this year. Space age design from the early 60s that takes fully automatic photos. This presumably functions by magic, though some naysayers suggest it's something to do with the selenium meter 🤷🏼‍♂️

The best shot from my test roll on the Voigtlander Vito BL shot on Lady Grey. I'm impressed with the results from a 70 year old camera but it's probably going to need a CLA before more use.

Caernarfon Castle (aka Caernarvon) is located in North Wales and was first built from 1283 CE by Edward I of England (r. 1272-1307 CE) to help, along with several other major castles, control the newly conquered area. As the administrative capital of Edward's still hostile province, Caernarfon Castle was tested in military attacks and modifications were then made to improve its defences which i...worldhistory.org/Caernarfon_Ca #BeaumarisCastle #CaernarfonCastle #ChepstowCastle
