Favourite Friends, Glen Affric

There's something about this little clump of Scots Pines that really appeals to me. Emerging from the carpark to look over the Caledonian Forest, they're the first few trees one sees. Characterful. I've admired these in particular every time I've visited for over 15 years.

An image from some incredible frosty conditions last December in Scotland's Ancient Caledonian Forest. A morning to remember. I waited quite a while at this particular birch tree for the sun to crest the hills to the south in hopes that the hoar frost would glow, and it did just that and then some!

Just finished a stroll in the Caledonian Forests of Rothiemurchus, emerged to find it raining that peculiar thick yet soft rain so bright in the sun... it could only mean one thing.
From the roadside the rainbow was mostly hidden behind trees, so I sent the droneybird up... Beautiful.

Caledonian Forest, Glen Lyon

The Caledonian Forest has been through a lot. Its trees are direct descendants of trees present after the Late Glacial, about 7000yr ago. Reaching peak extent around 5000yr ago, Scotland's climate became wetter and windier, reducing it until about 2000BCE. Since then, it has been mostly human influence responsible for its decrease.

Visiting the Nice Place™ later on a summer day, the sun was round to the west, so with a bit of hazy precipitation, a brilliant rainbow formed right over the birch and Scots Pine trees in the Caledonian Forest.
