Rank-n-file opposition to the tentative agreement between the #CaliforniaFacultyAssociation #union and the #CSU system has been steadily building, after union leadership called-off the week-long scheduled #strike after less than one day.

Welp, tomorrow is the first day of the Spring semester. And in about nine hours, members of my union (the California Faculty Association, which represents all faculty, librarians, counselors, and athletic coaches in the 23 campus CSU system ... a total of about 29,000 employees) go on a five-day strike (a.k.a., work stoppage) to protest management's failure to address requests/demands aimed at improving working conditions.

This will be the nation's largest ever strike of higher education employees.

During the strike, I'll spend some time walking the picket line and ignoring my work email and voice mail. The balance of the time will be spent studying for my Amateur Extra amateur radio license exam and playing Minecraft, I think.

Despite having the ability to call out 29,000 faculty members at all locations following a 95 percent strike authorization vote, the California Faculty Association has limited the action to four token one-day strikes at separate campuses.#CSU #CaliforniaStateuniversity #CaliforniaFacultyAssociation #CFA #Teamsters #libranet.de/search?tag=

95% of the voting members of the #CaliforniaFacultyAssociation #union (representing the largest higher education system in the US) voted to authorize a #strike against #CalState. This is an amazing level of support for a work-stoppage. This vote illustrates just how fed-up workers are with the CSU administration & how we feel this is a critical moment to take action to defend public higher education in California. The US labor movement is on the move at the moment--and now we are too!

Dear Colleagues,
Members sent an emphatic message that low pay, growing workloads, and systemic inequities are not sustainable — 95 percent of voting members support taking job actions if necessary to win a deal that addresses these alarming issues.
Thank you to all our members who cast ballots in last week’s strike authorization vote. We also appreciate the new members who joined our movement for a better CSU. Ninety-five percent of voting members demand:
+ A pay raise that keeps ahead of inflation.
+ Pay equity and raising the floor for our lowest-paid faculty.
+ Manageable workloads that allow for more support and engagement with students.
+ More counselors to improve students' much-needed access to mental health counseling.
+ Expanding paid parental leave.
+ Accessible lactation and milk storage spaces for lactating faculty.
+ Safe gender-inclusive restrooms and changing rooms.
+ Safety provisions for faculty interacting with university police on our campuses.

My employer, #ChicoState has released a report based on its "campus climate" survey. There's quite a few telling items in it, representative of widespread frustration across the #CaliforniaStateUniversity system, which has culminated in the collective bargaining stalemate with the #CaliforniaFacultyAssociation and administrators.

[Thread & graphs follows]

The survey was collected from April 27 through May 15, 2023, which resulted in a 41% response rate for faculty.

From the #CaliforniaFacultyAssociation #union: "During the 2016–17 academic year, a state audit determined that BOTH the headcount & compensation of management personnel at California State University had significantly outpaced all other employment categories. #DoBetterCSU". cfabargaining.org/

Spending on management personnel increased 32% after the [CA] state auditor said it needed more oversight.

Spending on the management’s salaries alone has increased by 32%, or $145 million since 2016. This number does not include benefits, or spending on executives like the chancellor or campus presidents.

Meanwhile, management continues to tighten the belt on spending for others, raising tuition for students and denying fair pay and equitable conditions for the employees who actually work with students themselves.

To illustrate their priorities:
for every 1800 students, management employs 18 management personnel and only 1 full-time counselor.

"Today, students drown in debt to receive a #CSU education, and many faculty are paid significantly less than K–12 teachers. Meanwhile, the highest payouts, along with free housing and car payments, go to those who neither teach nor do research." #CFA #CaliforniaFacultyAssociation #CalFac
