The #coyote #Canis #latrans is widespread in North America and expands also into human #cities. It engages in opportunistic #hunting #cooperations with the American #badger #Taxidea #taxus, allowing both to capture more #groundsquirrels #Urocitellus #armatus. D. Thornton et al. (2018) used #cameratraps to document these interactions.

It is proven that the coyote benefits from the cooperation, in which the badger is burrowing and hunting underground, while the coyote is capturing those squirrels escaping to the surface. To which extend the badger benefits from it is still subject of research.

Camera trap that has an array of cameras to systematically cover a large land area. This should increase the number of animals photographed.

How do I make a camera trap for insects? All existing commercial off the shelf camera traps seem to be designed for warm blooded animals only.

After literally months of technical glitches and uncooperative wildlife, I have finally landed a not-too-awful shot of an eastern pygmy possum (Cercartetus nanus) on the camera-trap, captured here in the hollow inside an old burnt-out gum tree - a difficult setting to light.

[not my usual fare (word play very much intended), but a fascinating and data-driven study; the study is not definitive, of course, but it adds to the scientific knowledge base, including with the socio-economic considerations…]

And here’s video off the trail-camera I had monitoring the camera-trap set-up, showing the pygmy possum shooting past and triggering the camera.

Two photos off the camera-trap that I brought in from the forest yesterday, showing an Eastern pygmy possum (Cercartetus nanus). Unfortunately in the shot where it’s in focus, the animal has its back to us, and where it’s looking at the camera, it’s just beyond the zone of sharp focus.

If you can’t cope with things going wrong, you’re not suited to camera-trapping…

Just in case you thought I was exaggerating about the spider webs!

This is the wireless motion-detector that triggers the camera.

After something like 15 months of near-continuous service in the field in my camera-trap, my poor old DSLR has finally failed, and I’ve grabbed the opportunity to bring all of the electronic equipment back in to clean off the spider webs and dirt, and see if I can get everything back into working order.

Here are some recent photos off the camera-trap - a native bushrat (Rattus fuscipes) and a long-nosed bandicoot (Perameles nasuta).

And the last of the three “successful” images off the camera-trap over the last fortnight - a brown antechinus (Antechinus stuartii).

Captured on Sydney’s northern fringes.

Again, it’s right at the edge of the field of view, so more cluttered with foliage than I was planning.

Here’s one of the three successful images out of the 290+ captured on the camera-trap in the last fortnight - a native Australian bushrat (Rattus fuscipes).

It’s right at the far edge of the image - the location I was hoping to capture the wildlife was a lot less cluttered with foliage.

Damn. Looks like I might have spent several months of my life earlier this year using a camera-trap to photograph bloody introduced rats.

I now think this is an introduced black or brown rat (Rattus rattus or Rattus norvegicus) on the left, and a native Australian bushrat on the right (Rattus fuscipes).
