Mystic and as haunting as an Indian myth, Tay John is a novel of outcast love, and merciless greed, a work that strikes a resonant primordial chord.

How Carley Fortune's buzzy romance books are making beloved Canadian locations seem ... sexy

BookNet Canada's research shows romance book sales in Canada jumped 54 per cent in 2022, and continue to climb. Most of the top-10 selling fiction books in Canada in 2023, according to BookNet Canada, were romance titles and #Romantasy, a #Genre that combines #Romance and fantasy. (Fortune's #MeetMeAtTheLake made their list, the only book by a Canadian author.)

All three of Fortune's books have been bestsellers, and in June last year, both of her previous titles were on the New York Times Bestsellers list at the same time.

My beloved friend Viv Pi has just successfully published her second novel in the Lila Birch mystery crime series! Lila is a PhD candidate in anthology at a Canadian university. While taking a break to visit her parents in the small town of Collinghurst, she becomes embroiled in another murder. Small town communities have their secrets as Lila comes to find out, all while trying to keep her thesis defense on track. #CanadianFiction #CrimeFiction #Mystery #Novels tinyurl.com/Defence-Wounds

For those who like climate fiction (and other discerning readers!): I just read Arboreality by Rebecca Campbell published by @StelliformPress Nice read! It's not a "big" book (like a Kim Stanley Robinson's Ministry of the Future) but a "smaller" more localized thoughtful multi-generational exploration of how people deal with climate change (and in that last part it is like KSR's book). Campbell's language is very precise and elegant.

A book lies on a hardwood floor, with a post card depicting golden-leaved trees slightly tucked under it on the left. The book is titled Arboreality. A press blurb praising the book is over the title. And a pre-20th century naturalist drawing of plants forms the bottom half of the book cover, the image partially obscured by an oozey black liquid

Lots of #GenreFiction this year.

#Ducks, by #KateBeaton is a #GraphicNovel. #Hotline by #DimitriNasrallah is set in the 1980s, and makes use of memory, time periods, and elements of #magicrealism There are 2 #Novels that are #EcoFiction, a #SubGenre of #SpeculativeFiction - #ScienceFiction. They are #Greenwood by #MichaelChristie, and #StationEleven by #EmilyStJohnMandel. #MexicanGothic by #SilviaMorenoGarcia is a #Gothic #Horror novel. #GothicHorror.
#CanadianFiction has come a long way from the White Anglophone #NationalAngst and grim self-introspection #Realism that once haunted our #culturalPsyche.

A problem with reading Canada literature is that it's very easy to forget that many Canadian locations have British names.

"Oh, they're by the Thames? I guess they're in England now. No, wait, apparently Ontario has a Thames."

So confusing.

Only doing this once, and it’s because I’m very proud that my friend Viv has her first book published on Kindle, so yes, I am promoting her ❤️. Plus it’s FREE right now.

Terminal Year is a Canadian crime mystery novel, where Lili Pine is a PhD candidate in Anthropology who discovers the murder of her grad student friend. I’m a huge fan of the book since I don’t often get crime novels set in my old world of academia!
