Smoke from wildfires in central Canada has now made its way across the Atlantic Ocean and reached the UK, causing sunrise and sunset over the UK to take on more of an orange hue than the blue associated with clear skies.
This is caused by smoke particles in the air scattering more blue light, resulting in mainly orange hues of light to reach our eyes.

#Hazy sky to persist as Canadian #WildfireSmoke and #SaharanDust invade US
More smoke and dust are ahead for the northern, eastern and southern states into mid-June, as AccuWeather meteorologists continue to track Canadian wildfires and dust sweeping in from Africa.
By Bill Deger, AccuWeather senior meteorologist
Published Jun 5, 2025 11:10 AM EDT | Updated Jun 6, 2025
"The haze is here to stay. Rounds of smoke from hundreds of Canadian wildfires, as well as dust blowing off Sub-Saharan Africa, will continue to envelop portions of the United States into the summer, say AccuWeather meteorologists.
"Recent rounds of smoke blowing across the northern and eastern U.S. over the last week resulted in a hazy sky, poor air quality and vibrant sunrises and sunsets. While the smoke has mostly retreated back into Canada as of late this week, additional episodes are expected through the summer, with the first expected early next week.
"Meanwhile, the Saharan dust will result in similar effects in the South, mostly in Florida and areas surrounding the Gulf and southwestern Atlantic. A recent round of dust blowing off of Africa will also have the effect of putting a temporary lid on potential tropical development."

π«οΈ While much of Michigan battles wildfire smoke, St. Clair County has so far avoided the worst of it.
As of June 2, the AQI in St. Clair dropped from 63 (βmoderateβ) to 40 (βgoodβ), while Beaver Island saw much heavier smoke, with levels hitting 153 (βunhealthyβ) before improving to 81.

I went to the gym today where I did Nordic curls, goblet squats, kettlebell stuff, and running.
Iβm always worried about the running. I used to race regularly, mostly cross country, but also mountain races and obstacle course races. Since hormonal changes knocked me for a loop, running has been extra hard. I have hypermobility, which means that I have to rely on a lot of muscular endurance because my toes and Achilles tendons are loose and floppy. Until I have all those muscles built up, running often results in pain in my toes and along the top of my foot.
Iβd really like to be able to run regularly again. I miss being able to do 10km mountain courses. I really really REALLY hope the air quality, temperature, and my health conspire to let me do this again. If I can run again, itβs better for us all. It means the country isnβt on fire again.
In other news, ever since doing chin-ups on Monday, Iβve been unable to straighten my arms. The DOMS are real. Looking forward to being able to do unassisted pull-ups and chin-ups again, too.
