This evening, I watched a great blue heron (Grand Héron en français) take a jab at a double-crested cormorant!

Spring has sprung, and Love is in the air...
These double-crested cormorants (Cormoran à aigrettes en français) appeared to be enjoying themselves shamelessly.

Taken minutes before sunset with Nikon D850, Sigma 150-600 C at 600mm, f/6.3, 1/500s, iso 3200 and processed in #darktable.

In a treetop bare of leaves, several pairs of double-crested cormorants sit in nests made of small sticks. The birds are mostly black, with long, goose-like necks, an orange face and chin, and long, narrow, hooked beaks. They have what appear to be long black eyelashes on either side of their heads, above and behind their eyes. Near the center of the frame, a couple sits mid-coitus, their necks stretched out and beaks open.

A Hooded Merganser couple (Harle couronné en francais) swam past me yesterday evening. Caught these pictures just before the light faded.

Captured with Nikon D850, Sigma 150-600 C at 600mm, f/6.3, 1/400s, iso 1600 and processed in #darktable.

An eastern screech owl (Petit-duc maculé en français) waking up for the evening hunt.

Must resist the urge to boop this raccoon's shiny little nose! Good thing I can't climb that high.

Face-off at the feeder! The male northern cardinal was hoarding the feeder, but this female hairy woodpecker put him in his place with a literal tongue-lashing!

Ce cardinal rouge male intimidait les autres oiseaux au mangeoire, mais cette pic chevelu l'a vite remis à sa place!

A northern red cardinal sitting at a clear tubular bird feeder with a round wooden base, facing-off with a hairy woodpecker. The cardinal is trying to bully the woodpecker and keep the feeder for itself, but the woodpecker fights back by swatting the cardinal with its retractable tongue. The background is blurred, and fine snow is falling.

The white-breasted nuthatch (sittelle à poitrine blanche en français) is not easy to photograph; they are often on the move, and rarely sit long enough to get a good picture. This one paused on a nearby branch, probably wondering if I brought it snacks.

A white-breasted nuthatch seen in profile, sitting on a small branch with its bark flaking away. Its face is white, with black eyes and a black stipe from its beak over the crown of its head and to the back of its neck. Its back is blue-grey, its folded wings black and blue grey. Its chin, breast and belly are white, with reddish-brown plumage between its legs. The background is blurred.

Portrait of a wild turkey, seen from the side. She looks at the viewer with one big brown eye, in which reflects a picture of the forest: bare trees and snow. Her face is wrinkly and pink, with shades of pale blue around her eye, and thin brown feathers that appear to be fine hairs covering her head and face. Her beak is yellow and brown, curved downwards. Between her eyes and nose is a small fleshy protusion in the shape of a horn, also covered in thin feathers. Her neck has short, broad feathers, dark brown and irridescent green, a stark contrast to the white background.

Mr. downy woodpecker (pic mineur en français), getting ready for the storm. Mud Lake, Ottawa.

A downy woodpecker seen in profile, sitting close to a diagonal tree branch. His feathers are fluffed up to keep warm in the wind. One claw can be seen extending from beneath his belly, clutching the branch. The branch appears dead, with bark flaking off and cracks in its surface. The background is white sky with some smaller blurred branches.

This hairy woodpecker (pic chevelu en français) was having a feast on a bug-infested tree. Hard to get a clean shot through the growth at the edge of the forest… I like the moss on this tree.
