On VE day in 1945, William Higham was finally able to stand down. He served in the RAF and flew a lot of missions with his crew mates in a Wellington Bomber. After the war, his favourite place to be was Mesnes Park in Wigan where he loved to sit and enjoy the bands during the summer months. Mr Higham passed away a few years ago and left a gift to the people of Wigan in his will, a sum of money to ensure a military band could play in the Park every year. The bench was a little extra, a place to sit and enjoy the Bands as he did. No doubt someone will be sitting there today to enjoy the 80th anniversary VE day celebration that has been organised for today, 10th May 2025. There's a band playing too. Thank you Sir.
