In the winter of February 2024, Cape Breton Island got struck with 150cm (5ft.) of snow within 4 days. It was described as one of the heaviest [snowstorms] in 20 years - named Snowmageddon.
The Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) declared a βlocal state of emergency", which was ignored by the Provincial leaders & called an exaggeration. People were trapped in the basement and 1st floor apartments. The able-bodied community came together to climb in and out of 2nd floor windows to help family, friends, and neighbors.
I was on the second floor of an apartment complex. I was one of the lucky few able to get out safely and freely thanks to an outside staircase facing the parking lot. I am 5'1 in height and the snow was way over my head once we shoveled our vehicles free.
These photos were taken days after the Army came in to dig out our community.
